Compression is pretty close. I'd be shocked if this thing made alot more hp then ours. It also has less travel then ours just alittle bit. I think this is very close to ours in everyway.

It's a street legal 250; obviously it's going to be a pretty close match power wise but judging from the spec's alone it has the edge box stock.
And the WR incorporates a full size suspension with less travel but larger and stiffer forks and shocks and has more ground clearance as well.
It looks like Yamaha engineers just took a different more modern route.
Your riding buddy that buys one shouldn't be able to run away and hide from
you but you'll probably be seriously envious of his new mount whether you admit it or not.

You've got to wonder why there isn't a 450 DS version as well? The WR450 is such a hot bike.
More than likely this Yamaha makes more HP than the KLX. Note that the peak HP is reached at 10,000 RPM. That means the rev limiter is well above that. If they've got this engine breathing well enough that it makes peak power clear up there, it's going to have a higher peak HP.A very revvy engine. Those are fun to ride, but low RPM torque may be lacking for the tight, technical stuff. You're going to ride it more likea 2-stroke.
One thing to keep in mind, as sinkoman aludes to, modding a FI bike is going to be a little harder. Until someone comes up with a programmer (which will take a bit, I would think) you're going to have a hard time changing the map. This means that mods that change the way the bike breaths (free-er exhaust) are going to throw the FI off (I didn't see any mention of a mass airflow sensor which means it's probably speed-density.) Unless I can change the map, I'd rather have a good carb. Also, you want to make sure that the alternator will generate enough juice to power the FI at low RPM so that you can bump-start the bike if the battery is dead!
Definitely some stiff competition. Kawi needs to answer with a DS version of the KLX450R, in my opinion.

You guys are nuts! Ready to trade in you KLX for specs on a piece of paper.
Sorry I'll keep my KLX there's alot more to a bike than numbers I'd say most of it's the FEEL of the bike.
And for $5900.00 it better be alot better than my $4800.00 bike!

If I read the features right its an all new 250 motor, not just simply the WR with lights. I've read that alot of FI bikes don't have a smooth throttle transition, its almost stepped as far as how it repsonds to rolling it on. Rolling through on a carbed bike its infinitely variable but some of the BMW's and others are reported to have a notchy feel as to how it responds.

My next bike will be a bigger bore duel sport like KTM or whoever comes out with something as cool! The 250 is cool but I think I'll step up to somemore power!

I have bigger bikes but when I throw my gear and backpack on and head out for a long weekend trip on the 250 it becomes an adventure as opposed to just another ride that anyone could do.
