Need to Carry Extra Fuel

Need to Carry Extra Fuel
A buddy and I are planning a trip out west to ride Moab and Mojave/Jawbone at the end of April. His CRF250X carries almost a gallon more gas than my '07 KLX. I can't afford the $$$ for a Clarke tank. My plan is to carry (2) 1L. MSR aluminum fuel bottles. It's not much extra gas, but better than nothing. As a last resort, I'll carry them in my backpack and empty them in the tank as soon as I get 40-50 mi. on the trail. I don't have the $$$ to get any specialized cases, so it basically comes down to strapping them on the bike. Any thoughts about how to mount them so they don't bounce off?

Cheap solution to needing more fuel --
Here's a simple solution for you.

And they make a very convenient spout for the little 1.5 gal can. I bought mine at ACE hardware. I made strapping to secure the can to the '07's rack. One pulling in either direction. (I used split gas hose to provide friction on the rack to avoid sliding of the plastic on the metal rack.) Total cost was less than $15! Now you'll have 3 1/2 total gallons of fuel with you, and at 60 mpg you should be good for about 210 miles before running out.
Here's a better pic of the one that I have. http://www.blitzusa.com/products/fue...nt/pfccarb.htm

I used a 5 liter jerry with a bit of thermal mat taped to the base to stop scratching, strapped on the back of the bike (where the tool kit bag usually sits). Used a length of elastic, tied in a loop, and devised a system of passing it through the handle to tightly strap it on. Only bounced out once, and all that was required was a quick tightening of the elastic loop.
will post pics when I find them...

A Wolfman Tool Bag holds a 1 pint and a 1 qt. aluminum fuel bottles, with some room left for smaller support items. It mounts easily to the luggage rack on the KLX. It ain't much, but you can have it with you, always. And the pack works great for stuff beside bottles, tubes, tools, bungies, jumper cables. Personally, I wouldn't carry fuel in a backpack unless I was hiking. Plastic tanks bungied on looks dangerous to me, but I know many people do it.
