Use atleast 20psi for your ride today and order a rimlock ($10) asap. Your tube popped when you accelarated hard causing the tire to slide on the rim, and taking the tube with it.
All the baby powder in the world won't stop this from happening. Only tire pressure or a rimlock.

You may have misread my intent. I've never ripped a tube stem by tightening down the nut too hard...because I don't tighten the nut. I use my fingers to just run it down the stem.

I just got back from trail riding (in a torrential downpour-mucho praise to the KLX for taking it all in stride). It sure would have been nice to have been able to run lower pressure in my tires, but eh, at least the tubes survived. I will be ordering rim locks soon.

I am going to order the tubliss system for the rear tire. That way I can ride to the trail on the street, air down and ride. Then pump it back up and ride home. And from the looks of the weather forecast it going to be rain and more rain as far as the forecast predicts. I think I'll just let the bike sit for a few weeks and get the tubliss setup instead of another tube and the tubliss system later on.

Been there done that ... got the t-shirt

If riding off road and with pressures under 15psi fit a rim lock AND leave the valve nut loose, like loose so it rides just under the valve cap. I ripped a tube after lowering pressure (wet sloppy hill), I fitted put a rim lock and ripped another tube. After leaving the nut loose I have never ripped another tube.

Thanks for the warning about the stem nut. I'd never given it a second thought, I just tightened it down like any other nut (oops!)

Do you really think the little klx has the raw power to tear a properly installed stem with just acceleration?

It comes down to the amount of give allowed in the stem/tube under acceleration or braking.
