I have the Muzzy coming shortly. I had a Big Gun on my KLR. I'll report on how the Muzzy compares to that as soon as I can.

According to the Muzzy website, the pipe should pass the park service test with the quiet core and spark arrester in place.
I read that too, but didn't they say that the rpms were in the 3,000 - 4,000 RPM range. At those RPMs it said it reached a quiet 92 or 96 db, can't remember. You think it will be much louder with the RPM's in the 7,000 range?

All you need worry about is the letter of the law in SAE J1287, the standard the forest service uses for OHV noise testing.

For our bikes, the test could be applied two ways: First, the reading could be done at 5,250 RPM (half of redline) and you would be allowed 99 db (+3 db over the 96 db limit is allowed for using half redline instead of half "rated engine speed"). In fact, a reading of up to 100.5 db could be acceptable because there is a range of +/- 1.5 db for test condition variation.

Second, you could make the case for having the test conducted at 4,100 RPM by siting the "Alternate Engine Speed" calculation of Appendix A in the standard which calls for test RPM to be 250,000/stroke in mm which works out to 4,085 or so.

I think that this test will be easy to pass with the Muzzy when running the quiet core and spark arrestor.

Wow, way to go!!, thanks for that bit of information Where did you come by this, when you were buying another muffler for another bike? Good information BMWHD!! I'm thinking hard about the MUZZY NOW!!

The Muzzy does not have a catalytic converter. Therefore it will most likely fail any emissions test that the stock bike was designed to pass. The catalytic converter is a honeycomb ceramic material impregnated with certain rare metals (CATALYST). At the normally high exhaust temperatures, these metals trigger a chemical reaction in the exhaust gasses and CONVERTS less desireable Nitrogen (NOx) compounds into more desireable ones. That's where the term "catalytic converter" comes from.

I'm blessed to live in Texas where the emissions testing is easy to pass for bikes at this time. i.e. there is none like there is for cars. If they change it near term, it's likely they will grandfather in existing bikes and only require future models to pass a test.

Having said that, in the near future it may well be impossible to buy and/or use aftermarket exhaust systems on bikes in any state. Until that time, I'm going to keep pulling the (near) useless smog stuff off my bikes.

Like someone else said, until they go after bull dozers, road graders, semis, school buses, etc. that dump more grams of CO into the air in one day than my bike will in its entire life, I'm not going to feel too bad about it.

Emissions tests? We have neither up here in Washington......well unless you live in King or Pierce county or maybe not.....Tony? Do they have them up there? Out here on the Olympic Peninsula we are still off the radar.....LOL and loving it. Did you ever drive through one of those towns where you said "that's it?" Well that's Forks, and I wouldn't change for a big bag of money......OK wait how big are the bills, and what kind of bag are we talking about? One stop light, now if I could only get my bike to trip the light sensor I can stop going in right hand circles. LOL hahahah, OK I think the 5th cup of coffee is kicking in, later all.

When I bought the bike, the shop tech mentioned future emission testing. Right now emissions on my car and truck go like this: 1. give them $25, 2. plug in the the on board computer to look for faults, 3. vacuum test the gas cap. For right now, that counts out my bikes.[sm=bounceybounce.gif]

A cheap upgrade is an older KLX250 or KLX300 stock muffler/exhaust. I have bought 2 off e-bay for $20 each. You want one that has the removeable spark arrestor. It probably doesn't make as much power as a Muzzy, but it can be quiet or loud and it looks stock.
Hmmm... this has never crossed my mind, but I find it appealing. So will buying one of these be better then drilling the baffle plate in our KLX's original exhaust, you think I will gain more horses buying a KLX 300 stock muffler?? Sounds good to me if it works, hell of alot cheaper, and quieter.
