MSO (manufacturers statement of origin)- if it says for off-highway use only, you're screwed in most states. I looked into this extensively last year.
Also, the KLX450 isn't designed and engineered to be ridden on the streets- the engine would not hold up. It's a racebike, not a roadbike. It would overheat and eat valves routinely.
That's why Kawi offers the KLR and KLX250S- these bikes are made for street use with their counterbalanced, choked up emissions passing engines and other dot legal crap like lighting, brakes, tires, gauges, mirrors, seatstraps, cooling fans, etc. If you want a street legal 450, your local Husqvarna dealer is the man to see. Not even the KTM is as sweet as the new '08 TEs. And Husky offers a TE250 if you don't need the fourfiddy. Damn, I should of bought one of them- again.
And no, the TE's engine wouldn't hold up to KLX250S duty either- it's a racebike that just happens to be street legal. Riding it on open stretches at constant speeds would kill it as well. BTW, sweet bike. Congrats. Good choice keeping the KLX250.

RE: Movin on up
I'm not really looking for a bike for the long stretch of highway. Where I live there are several riding places within a couple of miles from my house. I'm not going to load my bike up on my truck and drive 3 miles to the trails just to unload. Sometimes after work I just head out to the trails for a couple of minutes on the 250 just to cool off.
One good thing I found out today about the KLX250 and the KLX450. They share the same oil filter!SamePart #. For someone like me that already has a bulk of oil filters for the KLX250 that is awesome.

RE: Movin on up
Just think how many sales Kaw, Honda, Suz, Yam, are losing because their bikes are not street legal! I for one would buy any one of their 450s if it were street legal. I would buy the KTM 450 but it is too tall for me and to lower it would cost too much having a link less suspension I would have to send out the rear shock to have it modified. If suz. would put the DRZ 400 on a diet, give it a six speed andupdate it looks I would buy it! I guess I will have to sit and wait for some corporate jackass to say "Hey I got a great idea lets make our 450s street legal".... ( wereallwaiting)
