I know exactly what you mean, and I gave it some serious thought. The xr250 puts out 25 hp, well according to Honda, has a 34” inch seat & 11” ground clearance, so it should be fine, it comes with optional knobbies and soft bags for free.

Going solo, I think this bike would be the wisest and most fun choice. I’ll worry less about dropping it and causing damage to the bike or me (third world country….alone) than a bigger and more powerful and expensive bike. I’ll probably blend in a little better with a250 vs a ktm640 or sumthin. Besides it’s on sale in November for $279….leaves more money for fishing & surfing, if time permits, and of course cervezas.[sm=proof.gif]

I don’t plan on having an itinerary …… just going to explore and take in the culture and sights. I’m just bringing a credit card, cash, couple traveler checks, riding gear, compass, maps, first aid kit, couple mre’s, roadside tire kit (3 spoons, patch kit, handpump & 21” tube), my modified klx tool kit, several pairs of socks, couple changes of clothes, camera, inverter (to charge camera), sleeping mat, ultra tiny and light tent (just in case) and a camping fry pan. Due to FAA rules I’ll have to buy a knife and lighter when I get there.

Now if someone were to come with me… I would consider the available xr650[sm=wootwoot.gif]

 

Owen, have you ever seen Epic Rides on Speed channel. They did a dual sport ride in Costa on some WR's it looked awesome. I have a good friend who goes to Coast Rica every year, he loves it. Very little crime, the USD goes far, and it's hard to get in trouble.

Sully I never saw the Epic ride on Costa, wish I had.......when does the hunting let up at ONF? Last weekend they were out in full force?

I spent 6 months in Costa Rica (prior to 9/11). If you have the chance to go ... TAKE IT. It will be an experience you will appreciate for loooong time.
