I use a Modular helmet I bought for my snowmobile, its pretty neat, it has internal breathing apparatus, so you don't fog the inside when on the sled. Fog turns to ice at 0 degrees. It was pricey, over $300, but hell , I figure my head is worth It works great for riding, except when its hot out and I am looking for air inside. My shields get pretty beat up from dust and dirt and debris flying at me.
I have a Thor Motocross helmet I recently bought. I don't feel as secure in it, but it fits good, and My goggles fit it better.
As far as riding gear, get the best you can afford. I don't give a rats *** what anyone thinks about how I look. If I fall off and get up without any major scratches or road rash, I am happy.

Cool

Thanks guys, I love my Exo-400. I've got a mirrored visor coming in the mail too. I might be wary of using the mirrored visor while trail riding since it may scratch easily. No problem, my $12 shades fit comfortably under my helmet too.

when the sun is at a certain angle you get to see half your face on the inside of those mirrored visors. it used to scare the crap outta me as i thought there was some ugly dude in my helmut. once i realized it was just me i was horrified. i no longer wear a mirrored visor.
