Spoke to John at Moto-Pro today and he got me on the right track.

This photo is almost correct. The correction is that instead of 2 base spacers, there needs to be 3 base spacers.

The number of base spacers may be 2 or 3, this is dependent upon the number and thickness of the compression shims used. The number and thickness of compression shims is based upon weight, ridiing style, etc...

The key is to ensure that the spring retaining nut clamps down on the stack while not pinching the check plate. The check plate needs to be able to move up and down along the collar built into the spring retaining nut.

(With the exception of the base, none of the original valve stack is used).
