Howdy pking911, these bikes are supposedly lean from the factory, and pulling the airbox lid without rejetting would make it leaner. Hold off untill you search around on the forum for rejetting tips.
As for the plug change, make sure you clean real well around the plug boot, and after you pull the boot, blow air down around the plug to remove any contaminants so when you pull the plug nothing falls down into the cylinder.

Now, I thought from stock the bike ran lean from the factory. So wouldn't opening up the air box make it even more lean, which also makes the bike run hot. At least if you're rich, you won't run the motor as hot as if it were too lean.
I had taken my lid off at one point, and found it to make the throttle response more squishey if that's a description.. ha, Or maby less responsive is the word, but with the stock pipe on, it did make it sound more beefy, which made me wonder if people just "think" it runs better with the lid off, just because it sounds like it does? Personally I think this motor is more fuel efficient, and cruising friendly rather than it's fire breathing brothers which require alot of air flow, as well as alot more fuel flow! Which is why I just chose to install the larger KDX snorkle, rather than removing the cover.
