This is sticktly my opinion but if you want to keep your chains longer dont go smaller on the cs it eats the chains and the sprokets away go bigger in the back if you want more power. sure the front id easier put you will spend alot on chains.

How long is a chain supposed to last anyway? I changed to the 13 tooth at about 300 miles. I now have 1700 miles on the so called "junk" stock chain according to my dealer, and it looks brand new, and the side to side play is minimal. So I'm confused. But then I'm always confused so that doesn't mean much anymore.

RE: MOOSE 13-tooth front sprocket
exactly........if you replace the rear sprocket you have to buy a new chain anyways. so really you'd be stupid not to do the cs sprocket mod first. if not, you'd be spending more money on an unncecessary chain and have a new one (the oem one) sitting on your bench. for around $15 or so, you do the same thing, it's easier than putting on a chain and you then have the option of buying a larger rear sprocket when you have to replace the oem chain. new chain, new rear sprocket = big money compared to one cs sprocket.
i do not know if denniskirk.com is wrong about the stated applications for the 250/300, but bmwhd told me what sprocket fit, the one for the honda XL, and i trust whatever he says as he knows pretty much all about our bikes. i ordered the XL one and it fit perfectly. good luck

OK Dennis Kirk has a 13T JT sprocket for the XR650L in stock. So Will this fit our bike?
Is JT a good brand? I wanted the Moose but it's sold out. If you guys tell me that this is a fit, I will order the JT 13T for the XR650L.
Thanks.

Thanks guys. I just ordered the JT Sprocket 13T for the XR650L from Dennis Kirk. I'm psyched! Hopefully no more sore forearms from yanking the bar up to loft the front end. [:@]
Yeah Tony, that 14-45 sounds like the way to go after the orig. chain is done. That would be the closest ratio to the 13/42 while retaining the original 14T in the front.

my wife ordered the 13t that dennis kirk says fits our bikes.... its doesnt fit... that gear is thinner than the stock.... dont order the one that they say fits a klx300 and klx250s.....

Yes its thinner, because you need a shim, I went to the local machine shop and for a dozen donuts the guy made me a 105 thousandths spacer and all is good. I do miss the quietness of the stock sprocket though.

I'm curious why so many of you are talking about replacing the entire chain, just to go up on the rear sprocket. Why don't you just buy the two extra links, to make your stock chain long enough?

1. The stock chain from the factory is "junk" as the parts guy told me. He says that all stock chains are cheap and should be replaced asap anyway
2. By the time some of the owners change the sprockets, front or back, you might as well start fresh just to be safe.
