Huh I talked to my parts guy today and he said that the front shaft is unlike any other bike, something new this year, but I don't know what to believe.

Deric, you just have to get over this trust thing you have with your parts guy 
I've got a great dealer in Grapevine Kawasaki but they don't know jack about this bike.
Tony: Have you looked at the KLX300 sprockets? I'd be shocked if the front was different from our bike.

Yes. that was the fist one I shot down.
There is no shoulder on the inside. The splines are the same. FYI the '06 300R has the correct rear sprocket for the KLX250S, I just checked it.

To be more specific, the 300 has a retaining clip, the 250S has a big *** nut w/lock washer.

Great info Tony, Did you say that bent bike had these sprockets and chain on hand? I also noticed in your posts that you live in Everett. What part? I am just off Hyw. 9 near the Hewitt crossing (20TH). Hope to see you on a ride some day.
