it will be a lot noisier with the endcap not installed. I used to remove my DRZSM's endcap- yeah it increased power minimally along with throttle response but it was a lot noisier than stock. It was not even close to being as noisy as my KLX's BigGun Evo though. If you're just going for looks, maybe you can just bore out the endcap so it shoots straight through as if it were not there. I've never actually looked inside a 300R endcap so maybe that's not possible. But on my DRZ, there was a blockage down inside the muffler that I took a large drillbit too and opened it up so it would flow.

Don't bother with the end cap, just run it open.
Ok, well I just drove it and I must say, it sure sounds a lot better. Warms up quicker or at least its ready to rev right away! It seems to have good low end power and pulls quickly to redline with me on it so I am sure it will even be better for the wife. I am going to wait for the wife to test drive it before I pull the end cap as she will then be able to tell me how much difference it makes. She weighs in at 110 lbs lighter and being it ran great to me, she will really be happy. The bike is "not so innocent" anymore.

Ok we know what you weigh, and that along with how much lighter your wife is, you basically told us what your wife weighs, so it was nice knowing you man.[8D][8D][8D] Not that 130 is bad, but you know women and their weight. You're dead meat man.[sm=badbadbad.gif]

Yikes! I didn't think about that! LOL I am sure she will be ok with...We are too old to worry about little things like that. You should see the girls she works with. Now if I was married to one of them I would be dead meat after spilling the beans on their weight [sm=oopssign.gif]

09KLXowner,
Its pretty loud as it is right now with the 300 exhaust after replacing the stock exhaust. I like the way it sounds and was almost jealous and thinking I need to do some exhaust work on my DRZ I will take a look at the end cap and see what my options are. I may want to find a used one cheap and experiment with the drilling just in case I want to revert back to the stock 300 end cap.

oh yeah, you got the new DRZS right? maybe you have already, but drill that muffler out and remove the snorkel. it makes it breathe better. you've heard of the 3x3 mod so I'm sure you've looked into your options. that is a sweet engine on that DRZ- if only they could add a 6th cog to the tranny. As I was taking my new KLX out a couple days ago I was doing around 55mph and I always seem to lose track as to what gear I am in. I went to shift into 6th and it was there. I remember on the DRZ I would always shift at this particular spot in the rpms and it always bummed me out that 6th wasn't there. Of course I added a larger rear sprocket so that didn't help but still it needs a 6th gear imo. nice bike btw- both of them.

I have a 2007 DRZ400S and bought it last June along with my wifes 2006 KLX250S. I did the 3x3 mod and the JD Jet kit on mine. It runs great. It used to surge as it was a bit lean kind of like the KLX is. I know what you mean about 6th gear though. I am at stock gearing so its not bad but I have tried to shift it into 6th a few times . When I rode the wifes KLX a little while ago I upshifted to see if there was another gear, and there was.

Running the 300 endcap is a waste. The outlet is smaller than the 250S, its literally pencil sized. Just undo the two bolts, throw it away, & move on.

Hmmmmm...Maybe seeing I bought the KLX300R exhaust used, the previous owner removed it and just put the bolts back in. It looks way bigger that the stock KLX250S exhaust. I am going to take some pictures and post them back here...
Thanks,
db

Stock KLX250S exhaust - removed:

KLX 300R exhaust - installed:

Conclusion: The end cap appears to have been taken off by previous owner. No wonder it sounds so good!
