Default Mod or exchange for WR 250?

Hi there!

I have been riding with new friends. One with the KLR 650. Too big but powerfull and one with the 2009 WR 250 from yamaha... small like the KLX but much more powerfull.

Reading on the web had show to me that the little WR has 27 hp stock with Fuel injection.

I was planning to mod my 09 klx this winter with:
Big bore 351
New carb
New pipe
New air filter
This will give me around 26 hp.

Now I am considering to save my money to buy a new WR...

What do you think?

THanks
ERic

How deep are your pockets?

The WR is alot more than the KLX.

In the end it is all a matter of preference.

My buddy's completely stock wr250 dynoed at 23hp to the wheel versus my klx with a full muzzy at 21hp. I'm ordering my 351 kit this week and I'll get my bike dynoed after the upgrade, I'll be making way more hp and a bunch more torque than the wr250. I think either way, you'll be spending money. It is a matter of preference like buffalony said!

What sort of riding do you do? How tall are you? The Yamaha is quite a bit taller than the KLX, the Yamaha revs higher, the KLX has more low down torque, etc etc. The 2 bikes are quite different. Do you like fiddling with your bike or just wanna leave it stock and ride it?

I'm kind of in the same boat. I have an '08 KLR and an 07 KLX and I've contemplated selling them both and getting a WR250R. But I doubt I will. A couple things I like about the KLX are that bigger gas tanks are cheaper than for the WR and I can put a kickstarter on the KLX (yeah, $$$$, but I love the idea), something I doubt you can do on a WR. I've put a taller sat on the KLX, and handlebar risers, and it fits me fine, and I'm 6'2". With a 351 kit it ought to have plenty of power. So I feel like my bases are petty well covered. Still if I were to take an extended test ride on a WR I might change my tune.

Even with the big bore you'll still be spending less money if you do the maintenance yourself. Not to mention there still isn't a lot of aftermarket support for the WR. If you like to tinker and don't mind jetting the bike go for the KLX. The motor is tried and tested.

Here in Canada, with our canadian pesos buying all that mod stuff (big bore, carb, pipe, header, filter) will cost me about the same as a exchange for a WR....

And all that mods will put the klx close to WR... not more....

Today, going to vacation in your country!! Going to Wells near Ogunquit and Boston! See you next week!!

bye

Yamaha is measuring at the front sprocket, not at the rear wheel...big difference. The KLX can make 26-27 at the front sprocket in stock form. On the dyno on a good day the Yammie will make 24-25 rear wheel horsepower. Open the airbox give it a good pipe and power commander and you can get anywhere from 27 to 30 depending upon the dyno and conditions.

Your choice, base upon your preference..You definitely have the inseam for the Yammie. The price is much higher than the KLX, but it's more state of the art, comes with EFI, a more sorted suspension, is smoother (engine is almost turbine smooth), more powerful and has way more stator capacity, if that's your bag.

I will say this in the KLX's favor though.... With both bikes modded to their limits, the WR will never have the low-end torque of the KLX, if that's something that's important to you. The 331 and 351 give you plenty of that. I believe the largest bore kit avalable for the WR is about 290cc. Anything beyond that requires case machining.

Base upon my own preference, if I had to do it all over again I guy the WR, but that's just me.

i wouldnt get it, i hate f.i. on bikes. also reving a motor that high for power will shorten the life of it. klx also looks so much better (minus the head light, imho). just mod the **** out of the klx, youll be happyer in the end.
