Mild Airbox Lid Compromise
#11
OK, decided to try a little more "lift" on the lid tonight to see how things would go. The washers I used between the lid and the box as shims were only 1/8" thick. Today over lunch break I went to Ace Hardware and picked up some 1/4" nylon spacers and some longer 6mm diameter bolts.
Just for the record, with the lid installed, I measured the distance from the top of my lid to the bottom of the bolt threads at 5/8" (~21mm). Choose your bolt length based on the washers, spacers, etc. that you anticipate using. Bought mine too long so had to stack 3 washers under the heads.
Tried installing the spacers on top of the washers that were already in place from last night but found the seat pan was contacting the top of the snorkle and maybe "wrinkling" the opening. I use a KDX200 snorkle so if anyone's running snorkle-less then clearance with that stackup shouldn't be an issue. For me, I backed it off to 1/4" and it worked fine.
With 1/4" spacers there is a little noticeable noise there but nothing that I find irritating. Some math ciphering tells me that the total area of the gap is about equal to the equivalent of a 2.25" square cut into the lid or box. The opening on my snorkle is equivalent of about a 46mm diameter circle so I think the combined air inlet area is good enough for a CVK34 carb. I'm not a fluid dynamics specialist or anything like that but this is probably as far as this mod is going for me.
As for jetting, it seems OK right now just as it is in my sig line. With this heat we're having I don't want to play jetting games until it gets (and stays) a little cooler outside.
I'm satisfied with my little mod, overall.
