Was the stock shifter/shift pedal on the bike when this happened?
Asking b/c when the shifter is replaced w/ one that is stronger stuff happens to parts further along the assembly.
The shifter is known to be a bendomatic unit possibly to protect other parts like this.

If that's the pin, I wonder what happened to the parts that did the grinding? That's a tough call. You may be able to replace the star, button it up, and not have any problem...but. If it was me, I'd go one more step and pull the right hand engine cover off. Now you have more access to find the pin if it's still intact, and maybe see if there's anything in the screen filter on that side of the motor. It'll cost you a gasket...probably...but a worthy investment IMO.

SlapDrum the broken pin on mine was under that spring loaded arm, I barely saw it. Did you carefully check around that area? Lean the bike over to the right side or lay it over completely and tap on the engine with a rubber mallet then repeat it might fall out.

I'll right I've flushed it and tipped it and tapped it every which way and I am gonna say it aint there.... I even lost the magnet inside once and then fished it out in a fairly timely manner.
So... We'll see if it shreds the motor in seconds or if it runs for years and years...
Parts on on the way... I'll report back when it is all buttoned up agian.
Wish me luck

Good luck with it. Chances are better that those shavings were the pin. The main concern might be what acted as the blender, but it may all go back together and work without issue. Let us know.
