SlapDrum I had the exact thing happen about a month ago. It turned out to be a peg had broken off the shift star. It's an easy fix and the part cost about $26.00. Drain the oil remove the counter shaft sproket cover and sprocket. Take the shift lever off and the neutral wire. There is a small metal cover several 6mm bolts with 8mm heads , one phillips screw, and one 6mm nut with a 10mm head. The shift mechanism cover is a little stuborn I had to lightly tap on the two projections at the bottom to loosen the gasket. Remove the circular cover plate on the shift star (held in place by an allen heag screw) and I'll bet you'll see one of the 6 pegs is broken off. Make sure you find the broken piece. I found that piece beneath the spring loaded arm the holds the shift drum in gear. The procedure is in the 09 manual it's the same for any year.

SlapDrum, you probably better not ride that bike at all...but you probably know that. If a broken pin from the shift star/drum goes through one of the oil passageway holes under the shifter cover and into the tranny and gets picked up by a gear, it'll probably be a nice gnarfest of metal.

Roadglider... Easy and inexpensive is Music to my ears!!!!
Thanks for the detailed fix. Very Very helpful!!
I thought I would have it off and loking at it by now, but the 4th of July can be demanding
Happy 4th everybody!

TNC, Good Call. It is in the garage with no oil. Next step; remove the Sprocket and cover and follow Roadgliders guidelines.
Tuesday I'll order the shift star.
I'll take a pick when I get to the Shift Star to share the "view".

Any reason why this is a "bad" idea?
If it can hold this bolt is shoul dbe able to grab ahold of the little broken pin it is happens to cruise by...
I superglued a little rare earth magnet to the tip of the drain plug.
I'll go fishing between oil changes....

Hmmm If I super glue a rare earth magnet to the end of a coat hanger maybe I can go fishing inside the case thru the holes.... That seems more risky, but perhaps not more risky than not fishing for it....
Thoughts?
All those in favor of some magnetic exploring? What could possible go wrong
