Default looking for older dual sport

I am considering getting a second DS bike for occasions when a freind or family member is visiting without a bike.
The bike would have to be 1987 or older so it would qualify for antque tags. This way I don't have to pay for tag renewals, inspections, PP taxes.
It would only be used a few times a year by novice dual sport riders.
So it will have to be easy to ride and easy/cheap to maintain.
What would you get?

I had an old KLR 250 (1985) and it was tough as nails. Very similar to the KLX.

The old girl. Kickstart only, and drum brakes on the rear that seemd to wear out a lot were the only real down side.

If that's the case just pick up any cheap DS and don't tag it. Put a plate on it and splash a little mud on it.

Agree with a klr250. What about a good ole KE100 haha. If you can find one with all the lights still on it.

I've had alot of old Honda's and of the 10 or so I've owned I only had trouble with one and it was more of a dealer issue. Had an old xl350r and crashed it hard, rode it 100 miles home then it wouldn't start. First dealership I took it to couldn't fix it, had it a few months, second place fixed it same day it arrived.

For a guest bike it might be nice have e-start although that might preclude getting something old enough for antique plates.
