looking to buy, klx250s or wr250r
I like to tinker, I like to cruise around, dip into the woods, then back on the street, I am not looking to go 100 mph. Just want a fun bike that I can ride to work if i want, and I want to be able to tinker with it and add parts easily.
so what bike do you think is better? more fun? more modifiable?
i realize this is Kawi board, but i would really like some opinions
thanks

Have you considered a two-stroke?? Your description seems like one may fit.
Consider adding a ktm 300xc-w to the list, street legal and a total blast
if you can handle one ... Just sayin.
If the yammi existed back in 06 I would have probably gotten one and spent
even more than I have on mods than I have on my klx...but I still REALLY
like my klx.
LOL...did that help?
Life is all about compromises and personal expectations.
Oh what ever you do, don't buy new......there are some real nice wr's and klx's
on the advrider site right now....no 300xc-w's thou....well actually if there was
I probably wouldn't say nuthin so I could get it in my garage.

I just went thru the same thing. I was ready to buy a WR250r but I couldn't fine one. I found a KLX250 and went and go it. KLX was cheaper and newer.
The only thing the WR has is a just a bit more power due to FI and stock suspension is setup better.

That's a tough call. I think I would have been happy with either bike, but at the time I was looking (Fall '07) the WR's were just coming out and I felt like the '06/07 Kawi's had more aftermarket support at the time (as well as the shared parts with the KLX300R), that and the KLX was way cheaper than the WR. I'd go with whichever one you can find used that is clean and a good deal.
OH! BTW... I LOVE my KLX!!!

I you plan of going with large bore, you can get anywhere from a 292cc to 331cc kits for the KLX wheras the WR case opening limits you to about 280cc.
The WR has EFI, so you need a programmer (IE Power Commander, FMF, etc) rather than just a jet kit to get the most out of opening the intake and adding an after market pipe.
The WR developes more of its power on the top-end and likes to be rung-out, wheras the KLX has a bit more low-end and the power flattens-out in the upper revs.
The WR has a stronger subframe and way more alternator capacity (350W!)for accessories like heated gear, lighting, etc.
Both bikes are ultra reliable with long maintenance intervals.
It all depend on what you want in a bike. The KLX is difinitely the simpler of the two machines due to lack of EFI.

The support of others for the klx is great- but you can dump a lot of money in either bike to make it good off road. I agree to look for a low mileage bike with some mods. Most dealers void the warranty if you put on a header and stuff any way.
I sold a very clean klx that was 18 months old for 1200 less then I paid the dealer- plus I had put over 3500 in to the bike. My loss was someone else gain.
Even with the loss of money- I loved that bike and had a blast on it.
I now have a ktm 450-

If I were to do it all over again I'd start with a KTM450EXC, WR450, or some other 450 dirt bike that I could put a street plate on.
Don't get me wrong, I love my KLX, I just sometimes wish it was a true dirt bike.
