Default Lighting the way

Finally got around to fabbing the mounts for the dual light frame. Since the lights were off of an atv I welded up some 1" x 1/8" plate and used the original OEM light frame mounts. Hope to have them wired very soon to check if a 100w and 55w bulbs can be used with the stock stator. Tremor said that the stator puts out 240w stock, it would be cool if he is right. Need to change the one driving lens to a pencil also.

Mine left hers right....

Bug eyes! Very cool. Will defentily light the way.

I doubt a stock stator will output 240W. My 06', according to the owner's manual, has 36W extra leftover. And just a turn signal bulb can easily drain 12W.

06 klx has enough juice to pump a 140 watt headlight/s...or there about.

Already researched it .... I was going to get a Baja Designs dual setup...I cheaped out and run one of their 100 watt setups with pleanty of juice to spare.

I better make sure I'm clear about the whole thing.

240W comes staight from the 09 manual and is really optimistic, in my view.

I think it would be more realistic to expect about 180 -190W of steady output. Anthing more than that and lights will probably still work, but your battery will be slowly discharging because the charging system won't be able to keep up.

The actual output almost always falls short of what the manual says. Here's one example. The manual for the 06/07 KLX states a 210W capacity. When I acually checked the output, the charging system started losing ground at somewhere around 160W.

You probably will get about 25% less than what Kawasaki has published. Sometimes I think the rating in the manual is more based upon how much current draw the system will handle without burning any components out. Whether it's keeping the battery fully charged is another story.

Two (2) 100W lights (200W total) is a huge load for our little bike, make no mistake about it. That's about 17amps of constant current draw. You might be alright as long as you don't leave both lights on for really long periods. You could also let the charging system recover by turning one of the lights off for awhile once you're done.

Still not sure why you want to add all of that weight and bulk, but to each his own.

You've got more surplus than that. With an ammeter in hand my 06 KLX was able to handle an additional 55/60W halogen lamp wich was acually consuming about 68W at 13.8V. That was even while the cooling fan was running and the stock headlight was in hi beam (never dropped below 13.8V). Take the stock head light out of the equation and there is about 135-140W of surplus.

Also, intermittent loads like turn signals are of little consequence.

Anyway, what I tried to say earlier is that the 09 manual states 14V@17.4A for the alternators rating. You will only get about 75% of that figure in all actuality. The 75% figure is not suplus; it's total output, so you have to subtract the draw of the tail light, CDI and any other continuous loads.

I thought I had mentioned that in my first response, but it seems most people are latching onto the highest number and ignoring the rest

You are correct, Sir! The 09 output is a about 20-30W higher because it uses the same stator that is on our EFI models here in Japan...gotta have some extra oooomph for the electric fuel pump.

Anyway, I'd say he's safe with 55 + 55W lights, but 2x 100W for 200W total lighting load is a bit large and 55W + 100W is pushing the outer limits .

Reminds me of this old movie I watched as a kid. Looks cool I would try some Hid's in those bad boys save about 20w over stock bulb. I have one and it's intense to say the least. Two would be freaking nutty.

Dean thanks for the input on the wattage, I am going to try 2 55w bulbs to start out with. Then if I find the 100w bulb I was gonna try it just to see if it can pull it.

The dual cibies & light frame weighs about 4 1/2 lbs. The stock light & cover about 1 1/2. About a 3 lbs gain but the output is about double.

The dual hid BD weighs 10.5 lbs. The stock light about 1 lbs if that, so about a 9.5 gain. I wanna see when I poop myself. There are no tight woods nearby only wide open desert & dunes.

The fork guards have that Effex carbon fibre sheet sticker stuff on them. Cut em out of a 11 x 18 sheet. The wife didn't like the I robot white look to them.

Could the 09 handle heated grips and a jacket?
