Default Last exhaust question I promise

Ok so I ordered the muzzy and then thought I don't want to have to install the foot peg every time my kid or wife rides with me. The big Gun looks good, but what's with the re-packing? Does the muzzy require repacking and how often? I can still cancel the muzzy order and start all over, but I just don't know what to do. Oh by the way my dealer parts guy says that the DynoJet jet is garbage, and that he was going to get a good one what ever that meant, All I know is that I want full disclosure from him as to part numbers so I can replace anything by myself.

OK, first - Dynojet not garbage. Parts guy wants to sell you something else.

Second. Both Muzzy and Big Gun are good pipes. Go with what suits you. The footpeg issue is EXTREMELY minor. Just put a TINY ding in the pipe and the peg can stay on OR pop it on/off as needed. Takes 10 seconds max.

Deej,

You really need to relax a little. Stick with the Muzzy because it will hopefully get to you sooner; as it is already on its way. No matter what you end up with, you'll be happy with it. Why? Because unless you are a serious pro rider, you'd likely not be able to tell the difference in performance for the different parts. Personally, I'm going to shave a little off of the footpeg so I don't have to ding my precious Muzzy. The peg will still work just fine and the problem is resolved. While I understand wanting the best you can get, I think you are being run in circles by opinion! (and THAT is just my opinion...)

Oh, and second Todd on the Dynojet and the parts guy - he saw you coming.

I finally got the Muzzy put on yesterday. It's awesome. It's also awesomely loud. I'm pretty sure it meets WA State off road regulations(105 db(A) measured at 20 inches), but on road is another story(Max A-weighted sound level as measured at 50 feet (WAC 173-62-030): 1)78dBA at 45mph or less; 2)82dBA over 45mph. Stationary 20 inch standard: Models before 1986--99dBA.). I have a feeling it way exceeds those measures. I believe that I've heard the Big Gun is even louder. I'd stick with the Muzzy Deej. Quality is top notch, install is a snap(springs are kind of a pain though), and it makes the bike rip.

According to the Muzzy web page:

The test was conducted in the accepted 45 degree at 20 inches manner. At 3750 RPM, with the spark arrestor screen and our quiet core installed, the Muzzy pipe yielded a sound level of a very quiet 93 db.!
Our own tests, conducted at a slightly higher 4000 rpm yielded 94-95 db with the quiet core and spark screen, 97 db with the spark arrestor screen alone, and 100-101 with the “open†muffler.
These results put the Muzzy exhaust with the quiet core and spark arrestor well under the new (Jan 1,2003) California off –road sound limit of 96 db (when tested in the same manner).

According to the Big Gun web page:

(94-06) Kawasaki KLX 250/250S/300 Complete Exhaust System (Silencer Shown) Lighter than stock, adds up to 3.5 more horsepower. Meets AMA 102 db sound requirements also comes standard with USFS approved spark arrestor, Vortex Quiet Insert meets 94db state park requirements, Race Tools pillow packing. (only exhaust system to come with all the above features standard) Re-Jetting necessary. Standard 6 month warranty applies to this product.

Konacoiler - after you run it for a few hours it will quite down some. The doc refers the material they use to wrap the packing during manufacture and assembly and that it burns off after a few hours of run time allowing the packing to expand. Thus, the Muzzy will be a bit louder at first, then settle down somewhat after some use.

Thanks Nobrakes/bryanjt. According to the specs bryanjt posted, it does appear to meet off road, but not on road limits. I like the sound, but it's attracting a lot of unwanted attention-like the cops. It can't be any worse than most Harley's. I haven't been pulled over, and doubt that I would be, but if i pass one who hasn't had his donuts.. Speaking of that, everytime I pass a cop(even pre-Muzzy)they really check out the bike. Has anyone else noticed that. They may just be looking at the bike, but it looks like they're looking to see if it's legal. Probably a little of both. It does look like a motocross bike after all. I guess pretty much everyone: young, old, man, or woman checks it out.

My experience has been that they ignore me - never even a second glance as far as I can tell. On Memorial Day weekend here I even was stopped at a standard checkpoint where they were stopping everyone. I had just installed my Muzzy so it was sounding pretty mean. The policeman just checked my license and waived me on without a second look. Hopefully that is the norm and not the exception and I've just been lucky so far.

I have been pulled over on this bike, He didn't even get out of the car. He pulled right along side of me and said "I cant believe you have this thing register and insured". My reply was YES I do, This was a Christmas present from my wife and she had it register and insured before giving it to me, He said enjoy it and be careful. I said thanks and he drove away. From a distance this thing looks like an illegal dirt bike. I guess when he was behind me he must have ran my plates while I was still riding. When I see a cop they are looking hard at me and I know they are not looking at the bike but to see if I am legal![sm=innoc.gif][sm=devilangel.gif]

I know what you mean onestarr. The cops look hard at me also. I'm sure that they are initially thinking it's an illegal bike. Nobrakes, you were right about the Muzzy getting quieter. After putting around 80 miles on it, it quited down big time. At first I was especially concerned about waking up the neighbors at 4am when I go to work. It shouldn't be an issue as long as I only use the choke to get it started, and then shut it off right away.
