lap the valves?

So much wrong here.... I would be very leary of this. Right in the Kawasaki service manual it says that you should not try to alter the shims (grind or sand) them down. "lap the shims" Wrong terminology to make you feel better, all he did was sand or grind them down a bit. The service manual states that if the shims are grinded or sanded they can crack or split and fall down inside the motor can cause a lot of damage. Dont ever go back there, and good luck, hope nothing goes wrong.

As usual, lot's of great advice from people who have no idea what they're talking about.

I think it's good that you found some mechanics that understand how things work, and haven't just learned from a book. There aren't enough real mechanics around anymore.
