Kudos to that Mooredan guy
This TM36 carb mod for my KLX has caused me to research everything I could find on the internet on the subject. I knew that Suncup site existed but never actually went to the site before...just read posts pulled up by Google searches and such. After seeing that a bunch of the TM36 knowledge came from that site, I went ahead and started reading most of the interesting posts there. While I don't think the site has any more overall knowledge about the KLX than this site, one thing clearly came to the forefront...a fellow named Mooredan.
He has posted on this forum over time too. It seems like Mooredan has encountered most of the pitfalls of the KLX and all of the highlights during his period of ownership. Suspension, pumper carb, big bore, and just about every other beneficial mod has been covered by him. Many other little nuggets of problem areas like broken clutch springs to the external countershaft sprocket seal were also covered in great detail. His posts show a creative and thorough pursuit of both good mods and fixes of discovered problems.
I'm just mentioning this if you're like me in that you haven't been here or elsewhere on KLX internet sites when the '06 KLX came out. I came on the scene here in '09 when I bought my used '06. Of course the KLX300 has been out longer and has a wealth of applicable knowledge to the 250S also. The TM36 carb mod has several great contributors, in particular Mustang and Mooredan. I mention Mooredan specifically, however, as he has contributed an unbelievable amount of knowledge in the past on the KLX forums. I would recommend to anyone who hasn't done so to search out Mooredan's excellent posts on this forum and the Suncup site for a real wealth of great KLX knowledge. It seems most of his input ends around '09, but almost every bit of the info is still applicable to everything we talk about here today. Good stuff if you don't already know everything there is to know about the KLX.

It's funny...while typing this response, my old shop just called to say that my jets came in for the TM36. I'm off to pick them up and will hopefully have it running by the end of the day. I had plenty of time to address all the fitment issues...not many, really...so really all that's left is to dial in the jetting. And I think you and Mooredan have done most of the work for me. Hat's off to y'all.

I enjoy working on bikes just as much as I do riding them. Anytime I can play with a new go-fast goodie, I'm happy. Being able to post up what I learned for others is just icing on the cake.

Hey, Mike...I'm going to ask you on this thread, as I'm hoping you're still monitoring. Just got back with the jets. I'm going to go with the P-4 needle jet first. The last Mikuni's I worked on...VM style I think...you removed the main jet and just tapped out the needle jet...gently. Are the TM models the same design? I have the 6 page tuning deal for the HS40 as my tuning guide, but they don't get into the mechanical servicing in that document. I feel sure I can tell when I get in there, but it was really the only disassembly question I wasn't sure of at this point.

The TM36-68 takes a 568 needle jet. It should look like this:
It threads into the carb body instead of sliding in. You'll see when you take the float bowl off. Just gently use a wrench and screw it out.

Doh!...LOL!...yeah, I just glanced at the bags of jets at the shop. When I took the needle jet out of the package, it obviously had threads. Neat design. Does that mean I still can't beat on it with a hammer?
Thanks.
P.S.--I think I probably bought too many optional jets, but I hate not having options if the tuning doesn't go smoothly. I'll just about bet it will do well as is with the final setups that you and Dan came up with, but I got 2 optional pilot air jets, 2 needle jets, 3 main jets, and 3 pilot jets. I tried to get the 51 needle option too, but Sudco only had the 50.
Thanks.
