KLX351 vs. DRZ400

KLX351 vs. DRZ400
I've seen a number of comparisons to the WRR, which is a reasonable comparison of starting points, but I am wrestling with the decision tom add 100cc to the KLX or sell the KLX and buy a bike that comes from the factory with 400cc. What I'm looking for is more capable highway performance. I'm happy with the off road performance of the KLX; yes it could use a better suspension, but for the pace I ride off road it has adequate power. What troubles me with the KLX is the cruising ability of the KLX getting to the off road fun. The least little bit of headwind or climb really slows the bike down.
I'm thinking that I can sell my KLX and pick up a used DRZ for essentially the same money, or spend $500 upgrading the KLX to 351.

FWIW the DRZ 400 only has 5 gears vs 6 in the KLX. DRZ has more power at the bottom but, because of the gearing, ends up winding out at about the same top speed. Outdated front end suspension on it, and I think its a bit heavier too. Search on here, it's been discussed before. Suzuki would really have a winner if they would update that bike.

I own a klx400sr(the kawi version of the DRZ400s) and I got it after owning a coupla dr350s modified for offroad but still retaining the dual sport traits. My klx4 is geared to the drz4 e-model specs, pumper carb'd, exhaust and I can cruise at 70mph uncomfortably, imo, but it still has a ways to go on the topend. My dr350s had an easier time cruising at 70 with the 6speed and street gearing but that didn't mean alot to me....that extra gear helps though!
If you're used to the handling of the klx you'd need some time to get used to the drz4. It's taller and feels topheavy to some. I changed the ergos with a new tank and handlebar\topclamp switch. The stock power is soft but is workable and I wound up enjoying the close to 300# bike. With the suspension redone, it's pretty good offroad in enduro-type situations.
What are your requirements in regards to 'cruising ability'?

I just bought a KLX250S and haven't decided on the 351 kit yet, but I can tell you as a former DRZ400 owner that the 6th gear of the KLX is really nice. The DRZ had the power to cruise the highway with a headwind or hill, but with only 5 gears it sounded like it was ready to grenade and had a lot of vibration. As an experience street/racetrack rider but fairly inexperienced offroad rider I didn't care for the weight or height of the DRZ.

The DRZ might be a good choice if you're a 6 footer, or if you come from a background of dirt riding and you're use to tall bikes.
When I was trying to decide between DRZ or KLX I went to a local Suzuki dealer and tried to mount a DRZ. I kicked my right leg over and my foot hit the toolbag and stopped. Had to grab my pant leg and hoist my foot over the seat. Then I used a series of hopping motions to try to get closer to the bike. The dealer saw what was happening and helpfully grabbed the rear end of the bike and uprighted it. I sat there with my legs dangling and the tips of both toes about two inches above the ground. Bought the KLX.

I bought the KLX250SF to tow behind the cage when I go to northern New England and can't take the Vstrom. I never planned for it to be a highway bike. I don't really see the point of blowing out the engine to 351 either. I would have bought a bigger bike in the first place if I wanted that.

My impression of the DRZ was it felt like a 3/4 scale KLR with the weight distribution all wrong and the seat sucks. The power wasn't much more than a piped and jetted KLX250. If you want a dualsport for the street, get a KLR. You'll cruise 80mph all day with ease on pavement and you can journey a long way in a day of gravel and jeep trails. If you try to use it like a moto bike, it'll beat you all to hell.

I just sold my 07 DRZ400S, It had a full Yosh Exhaust, DJ Jet kit,3x3 mod,14/47 Gearing. Roll on wheelies in first and second were cake third easy with a little clutch. Great bike, plenty of power. My problem was the horrible front forks and height and weight. They carry their mass alot higher than a KLX250
I feel the KLX is a great bike from the little I've ridden mine. Underpowered from the factory but with a little tweaking I'll be happy with it, I ordered .42kg fork springs, Installed 13/47 sprockets, skid plate and added some stuff to make it more trail friendly. I like the KLX for my 5'8'' 178lb self alot better.
