Wow.. Sounds like a ton-o-fun.. 1-3rd gear WOT roll-ons must be scary !

With that lidless DJ148 setup, and full FMF exhaust, you're probably making at least 28 HP and over 21 Lb Ft Torque.

This is my first dirt bike, so nothing to compare it too.. but with the QT throttle, it is now a rocket ride...LOL

No replacement for displacement. The really cool part is you have a bigger more powerful engine without adding any weight. How cool is that!

Woohoo... scored some dinosaur squeezin's! Was at WallyWorld getting some groceries and noticed they had Valvoline 10w-40 4 Stroke Motorcycle Oil on clearance marked 2.50 a quart. When I checked out, it rung up as $1/quart

Went back and cleaned them out... 3 gallons for $12

Put in 27 miles today playing on the back 40. Time to dump the dirty oil and change out my clutch springs. I have the Barnett 06017 set on order, but they haven't shipped now going on a week. I also have the 06043 set, so they will have to do for now.

VERY!!! LOL

BB kit availability was a big selling point and part of the plan when I chose the KLX as my first off-roader. I wasn't quite ready to make the jump as the 250 was running great, but cpr1 putting it on sale was too good to pass up!

Update:

Only have about 45 miles on her as between work and weather there has been little riding time.

I decided to put the lid back on and drop the main jet to a DJ132.... honestly, I simply don't need the extra power of the DJ148 and find myself coming in hot a little too often on my regular trail...lol (Lidless DJ148 is a monster!)

She doesn't bog down in the usual places, and the low end grunt is perfect... loads of fun!

I agree with everyone in all the other big bore reviews.... KLX should have come this way from the factory

Gearing... I got all froggy and figured that my current 14/49 might be a little low for the 331, so ordered up a 15t and swapped it Sunday afternoon. Got a little time on it today, and all I can say is that I hated it; never felt like I was in the right gear.

My next group ride (mid-April) is mostly forest service roads and very little singletrack, so I'm tempted to leave it like it is, but for my everyday riding the 14/49 is going to stay.

We don't have any hills, but most of my riding is shorts bursts of speed between sandy turns, so lower rpm cruising is not that important. On the other hand, I also don't like droning on at 7k on the pavement between trailheads.

Where is that 7th gear when you need it?

Edit: Side note... I've been running Motion Pro LiteLocs front and rear. The front cracked and took out my tube last weekend, and the rear somehow pinched a tube about 3 weeks ago. Next tire change I will be replacing them with something a little more durable, which will also require more weights to balance out, but I have no desire to patch a tube on the trail.

Ready to reassemble. Waiting on air valve gaskets, block-off plate from klx678, new shims for my valves... and I have some heavier Barnett clutch springs coming.

Tonight I:

- Reversed the MCM mod and put the spring back on the KACR
- Cleaned the cylinder gasket surfaces both upper and lower
- Put the rings on the piston and separated the gaps according to the manual
- Installed the piston... wire ring clips are the devil. I did find a video on how to pry them on with a small screwdriver and that really saved my fingers.
- Moved the dowel pins from the old cylinder to the new.. I had to hit the holes with a green scratch pad to get them to slide in
- Moved the radiator hose fitting from the old cylinder to new. O-ring looked good.. had some life, wasn't flattened out.
- Removed the air valve cover and reed valve from the head, then cleaned up the gasket surface.
- Cleaned up the gasket surface for the cam chain adjuster.
- Drank a couple beers and ate a slice or two of pizza
I use wooden popcicle sticks to pry those wire clips in, doesn't scratch the piston. get a bag of them from the crafts store.
