KLX300 Dual Sport mods
#24
Howdy Nigel,
Im also in the capital district on a KLX300. Mostly been riding October Mountain and Pittsfield State Forest thus far. Im going to check out Beartown next week. Any recs for close (ish) spots other then those?
Can you tell me what size MT21 front you went with?I see they make a 90/90-21 and I am not sure if this will fit. I still have stock rubber and I am about to order up a D606 for the rear and this combo sounds great. Do they do ok on short pavement sections? I will sometimes ride to Pittsfield from my house which is about 20 miles.
Also wondering how loud the bike is with your exhaust setup. Im really interested in a bit more grunt in the lower gears. I will prob end up going with a gearing change but would consider an exhaust upgrade if its not too loud (I prefer being subtle on this bike)
Thanks much..maybe Ill see you on the trail!
Cheers
Travis

Hey Travis. The 90/90-21 fits perfect. Both the Pirelli and the Dunlop do very well on the street. They wear very well, got close to 2000 miles on them so far, with a fair amount on the street riding getting to and from trails, and they still have a lot of bite and life left. Way better than stock in the dirt, and other than being noisy, they handle the street just as well. My guess is I will get a full year of riding then replace them.
I joined a local Nassau club, White Oaks ATV park, I have some local family property, and ride occasionally on trails in Ravena with a buddy that lives out that way. I plan to do some more branching out, but have had fun being able to stay local so far this year. I also ride with my kid, and the local stuff makes that easy. The MA state forest riding is on my to do list.
The Delkavic with the spark arrestor is reasonably quiet, should not bother anybody. The main reason I did the exhaust was the weight of the stock cat/muffler. Best power mod though is the secondary throttle blade removal with the power commander fuel controller.

Nigel,
Do you have the free length and I.D of the shock spring? I recently bought a lightly used 2022 KLX300. The rider sag is just over 4" or about 47% of the total travel. With some gear on the bike and me ready to ride the weight will be about 220 - 230 pounds (tank bag and 1.5 gal Rotopax). I'm guessing I should be looking for a spring around 7 - 7.5 Kg/mm. Does that seem right to you?
TIA, John

John,
The free length is 10 1/16" for the stock spring, OD is 3 1/16". Sorry, I will have to go back and get it out of the shed to check ID.
I used the racetech site to calculate the spring rate, have you tried that out? I have not done any riding with extra gear and I have dropped some weight also, so I don't have the experience to recommend a spring rate, but sounds like you are in the ball park.

Thanks Nigel, I did check race tech's site and they do show the spring rate at 7.25 Kg/mm. However they don't have a spring in that weight. In the past I've used Eibach springs from Summit Racing - usually only $75. However, the only springs they show with 400 #/inch (about 7 Kg/mm) are 9 inches long and 2.25 inch I.D. I happen to have one of those springs on hand from using on a MG V85TT. I'll see if I can get a caliper in to check the ID on the KLX, so don't bother checking yours for me. I'm going to see if I can get the proper sag with just adjusting the shock preload, but would prefer a spring with the proper rate.

Thanks, I just installed a 6.7 Kg/mm which still may be a bit on the light side. However, I'm going to run it for awhile before I try a 7.0 Kg/mm, which I also have. I've been getting my springs through Summit racing, sent directly from Eibach for under $80 each. They do have 10in x 2.5 I.D. 300#, 350#, 375# and 400# (7.0Kg/mm) springs in stock.
