Default KLX250sf Underpowered?

Have an oppurtunity to get a 2009 Black KLX250sf, brand new tommorow.

I also have the oppurtunity to save 1,200 and get a 2008 WR250R with 7,500 miles.

I have read alot of people saying the KAWI is underpowered...

What should I do and why?

Thanks guys!

The WR is going to cost 1200$ less than the Kawi? Any idea how it's been treated over those 7500 miles? If it's used without having been abused, get the WR. But you are comparing an SF to a Dual Sport, what are you going to use it for? Do you want a SuperMoto or a DualSport. Making one into the other can eat up quite a few bucks real quick!

Go look at both bikes and pick the one you like the best. I have a 2010 klx 250s and love it. Yes it is underpowered but a hell of a lot of fun. The basic nods are a must and really do wake the bike up.

Depends what you want the bike for. A 250cc is not going to be a rocket on the street.

I picked the Kawi for two reasons:

1. I liked the overall look of the Kawi better.

2. The seat was lower on the Kawi.

I ride the SF.

Off road to me is the sidewalk.

I went to a 351 because I could. It was well worth it in the end. Now the bike is a total blast to ride. It always handled well. I ride it all over and commute to work 20 miles each way. Still getting 60 mpg.

Is it under powered? Once you let it brethe, Its a good ride and cruises 60+ mph with no problem.

The sides of my front tire are as worn as the center.

I don't know what you are looking for.

It depends on your definition of underpowered. It will do the speed limit on any road, but is not a wheelie machine unless you get a big bore.

I have a 09 SF. I have owned several bikes in the 600 to 750cc range and this bike is the most fun. It puts a smile on my face every time there is a banked turn or sharp corner. I purchased this as my daily commuter so dirt tires were not an option. It was this or a Honda CBR250R. I made the right decision.

DJ kit and pipe = more than enough power.... An underpowered motorcycle is just a state of mind. Either choice is a 250 after all.

Cheers,

J

Yes, in stock form, it's quite plugged up. I can't even put my pinky finger into the exhaust pipe. Also the airbox is quite restricted with the snorkel. As said above, Change the exhaust and open the airbox then rejet the carb and you'll have a very fun bike.

I have a stock D-Tracker and love it. Itīs a single 250cc commuter bike, so you canīt really say itīs underpowered.
When it comes to bikes, I always try to buy new because they require A LOT more maintenance than a car. I would buy used only if I personally knew the previous owner and how he takes care of it. But thatīs just me.

I would buy the KLX, save the $1,200. Spend about $850 on the 351 kit, DJ kit, and exhaust, and be miles ahead of the WR. And you'll have about $350 left over for gear & gas.

Oh, and I'd get the S version, street riding just isn't as fun as off-road
