KLX250S versus KLX300
Hello all,
Beside the obvious (displacement, flashers, mirrors), what are the difference between the KLX250S and the KLX300? Why the 250 is 28 lbs heavier than the 300?
Thanks!

Starter, tool kit, mirrors, ugly 5 lb plate holder, is the exhaust the same on the inside?not sure. Good question, why would the weight be less for more?
KAWASAKI KLXâ„¢250S IS THE ULTIMATE LIGHTWEIGHT DUAL PURPOSE MOUNT.
Ultra-nimble 250 offers outstanding balance for trail riding.
For those seeking go anywhere off-road capabilities in a street legal motorcycle, Kawasaki’s KLX™250S is equally at home on the pavement as when the riding terrain calls for enduro-like performance. Aggressively styled in the same manner as Kawasaki’s KX™ motocross machines, the KLX250S features a lightweight electric-start engine with a wide powerband and a lightweight, high-tensile steel perimeter frame.
The KLX250S is powered by a compact, liquid-cooled, four-stroke, single-cylinder engine displacing 249 cc. The engine is mounted towards the bottom of the perimeter frame, helping to deliver a low center of gravity and enhanced maneuvering on tight trails. A gear-driven engine balancer helps reduce engine vibration for greater comfort and less fatigue on longer rides.
The rigors of off-road motorcycling dictate additional protection for the exposed underside of most machines. The KLX250S comes standard with aluminum engine guards to protect the crankcase during off road adventures.
Superb balance of power and handling.
The Kawasaki KLX™300R offers a compact, quick-turning package that’s well-suited to tight trails or long days exploring off the beaten-path. With a tractable engine and comfortable chassis, the KLX300R is the ideal partner for off-road adventures. Thanks to a liquid-cooled four-stroke engine, perimeter frame and plush suspension, this Kawasaki gives off-road riders the balance of power and handling they desire.
Designed to be ultra-compact, the KLX300R’s liquid-cooled 292 cc engine features dual overhead cams activating four valves atop an Electrofusion-coated aluminum cylinder, which is highly-resistant to wear. The engine is wrapped in a high-tensile steel perimeter frame based on the design of Kawasaki’s KX™250 motocross bike. A 26.5-degree steering angle and shorter wheelbase contribute to quick handling characteristics.
The KLX300R comes fully loaded with equipment to handle the rigors of trail riding. Standard items include headlight and taillight, odometer, sidestand, hand guards, snail-type chain adjusters for quick rear-wheel removal and quick adjustment of the O-ring chain, a U.S. Forest Service-approved spark arrestor, and a large fuel tank with reserve petcock.
See you gave me a complex and I just had to edit it.

RE: KLX250S versus KLX300
Cool pictures of what our bike would look like without all of the dual sport stuff. I think the gas tank is plastic. And that would be one of the biggest weight factors along with the starter. I'm not sure if the 300 is kick only, but there are easily identifiable differences that would account for the weight comparison.

RE: KLX250S versus KLX300
The main weight offender is the battery & e start motor & all its wiring.
Other differences.
Obviously all the street gear like blinkers, larger head & tail lights, switches, etc.
Adifferent exhaust with cat.
Steel gas tank with differens shrouds.
Rear fender is different to accept the rack which the 300 does not have.
Gauges vs no gauges.
Passenger pegs.
Thats the bulk of the weight difference.

The rear rack is also very heavy as anyone who has removed it knows, not to mention the rear fender extension with licese plate light. So also is the key lock - that thing is like a chunk of lead. But as KLXer said, I think the biggest single culprit is the battery which actually is a big chunk of lead, followed by the starter motor and all the rest.

Yeah, it felt very liberating to tossthat cat converter, but the e-start is definitlely a keeper. I was suprised to find out how little the kick start kit weighs.
