What are you looking to do? They are actually very different kind of bikes. I get 70 mpg on my KLX250S; it will go as low as 60 mpg on extended high speed highway rides. I have a XT225 which is closer to the DR200SE and gets about 80 mpg.

Anyway, I don't think the DR200SE is that great of a bike. The only good thing that I can think of is, is the good sized gas tank. I don't know what kind of riding you are planning to do but in that class, the Yamaha XT225 is a much better choice than the DR200SE.

How is the XT 225 compared to the KLX 250s power wise?? Also I always hear that motocross bikes are tuned for performance rather then our bikes, what exactly does this tuning compose of?? Its the same displacement, and we have already rejetted, put exhaust on it, etc.. So whats going to be the biggest diff. between a Kawasaki KX 250F and the KLX 250s?? And what I mean by this is just power, not the suspension or anything like that. What do they do to the engine to make it perform so much better that ours lacks?

I get 50+ mpg riding the pee-water out of it. I have all the free mods plus exhaust.

I bought a new XT225 new, in 2001 and rode it for three years. I then found a great deal on a one year old 2003 Dr200SE, with only 34 miles on it for about $1800. I knew of someone interested in buying my XT for about the same price, so I sold the XT225 and bought the DR200SE.

The XT has a bit more power and a six speed transmission, but, there's no way I would ever go back to it, after riding the DR200SE. It fits my riding style, the areas I ride at, and short legs better then the XT and the seat on the DR is much better then the XT. The seat on the XT was a pain. It was like sitting on a 2x4. The suspension, ride height and other features are nearly identical. I prefer the larger fuel tank and lower seat height of the DR200SE, as well.

If you need to make Highway jaunts, requiring 55mph+ speeds, the six gear on the XT can be handy, but, I rarely need that. All references I make are stock configurations on both bikes. I've put about 1600+ miles on both, since 2001, about 90%+ of that dirt.

Now, if Yamaha would sell their Tricker in the U.S., I would definately look into that, though.

I'm still interested in the KLX250S, as well, I'm just seeing if people have any long term problems with them, waiting to see if more fuel tank options become available, and I've been waiting to see if rumors of more Dual Sport options becoming available pan out (which it looks like they won't be).

As far as the mileage goes, on the DR200SE, I've gotten anywhere from 70-100 mpg. I never really pay close attention, plus, there are times we coast with the engine off for ten to twenty miles of a typical 100-120 mile ride (one stretch of coasting was about 18 miles non-stop in Eastern Washington).

If the seat height is not an issue, I would lean towards the KLX250S over the XT 225 and DR200SE, if being limited to about 100 mile range on the stock tank is not an issue. There are a couple options for swapping the tank out, if required.

Laters.

I just did an MPG check on my KLX250 and it was about 65mpg. This is with all the carb/air mods, and a Muzzy exhaust. I have had absolutely no problems with this bike. I've put 2900 miles on it in 3 months and everyone of them problem free. In my opinion there is no comparison between the DR200 and the KLX. If you only want a putt around, gas saver, then the DR would be fine, but for serious trail use, go for the KLX. The KLX is equally comfortable on/off road. I did see another option at my local dealer yesterday-a street legal DRZ250. I had never seen one before. Does anyone know if it is a new model? I only glanced at it while heading out the door, but it looks like competition for the KLX. It didn't appear to be water cooled though.

The KLX spanks the XT in terms of power. 25 more cee cees, liquid cooled versus air cooled, & DOHC 4 valves versus SOHC 2valves. To go an indicated 75 mph is effortless on the KLX, but on the XT, you are really pushing it.

The funny thing is, the XT will wheelie much better than the KLX...much much better! Really shows how tall the gear ratio is on the KLX.
