Dropping the gearing improves 6th gear acceleration and makes 3rd gear more punchy for exiting corners and perfect for faster trails. 1st gear can be used without the clutch as a slow walking pace. All this at the cost of fuel economy and crusing comfort. Although the motor is so smooth at higher revs, it's not a big difference.

Sounds good to me. Is it good enough to just drop to a 13T, or would you do the rear also?? I'm going to get the Dyno jet kit, drill out baffle plate, and lower gearing, that should do it.

The 13T is a good improvement. Probably the best compromise if you're goingot use it a lot on the street. If you're doing a lot of trail use, 13/45 is the better way to go. Some guys even go lower and use a 13/47. The stock KLX300R has a 14/48 or a 14/50 I believe because it's designed for trail use. I just added the 45T in the rear and new chain but haven't tried it out yet (waiting for it to warm up outside this afternoon)
