Default KLX250S General Questions

New owner here. I know these questions are probably out there but not all in one spot. After looking at whatpeople are posting, I figure these will help alot of us newbies.

How long do tires, brakesand clutches usually last? A mostly dirt and mostly street answer would be great.

What is the longest trip you would recommend on the KLX 250S? I ask because I have a 140 mile trip, I make once a month and am consideringriding but it is quite a ways. However, I could go on back roads so I wouldn't be holding high rpm for the whole thing.

Any other useful general info or tips?

Thanks!

Hey Mikey, first off if I didn't say it before, welcome to the forums. I think I missed you coming in because I didn't see you post in the new members area. Might want to do that if you get a chance. As far as the tires, I got 5000 miles on the original Dunlop 603 front tire that came on my 06, and I'm now on my 3rd rear tire. I ride a lot of street, but I do get off onto the gravel roads and trails a lot. I recently mounted up a set of Kenda K270 tires, sort of a 50-50 tire, and I have like 1500 miles on them and they still look brand new. Oh I'm not complaining about the slow wear on them but I really want to switch back to a set of Dunlop 606 tires. I have 7700 miles and the brakes still look like they have 50% of the life left, clutch is still strong.

Hi and welcome to the forum!. I can not tell you about clutches and brakes, Have not had to change them I have almost 3000km's on my bike now and the back tire has some wear, and the front still like new. I ride an average of 150-200km's every time I ride(approx. 90km highway 20km town and the rest on the trails) the A$$ gets sore but the bike does not flinch!! I try to keep my RPM's between 6500-8000rpm the bike likes this rpm and it is the spot that has the most usable power, I find anything over 8000rpm sounds like over-revving and anything under 5500rpm the motor sounds like it is struggling!
Hope this helps a bit!!

Ken

Mikey, I ride the crap out of my 2007. I've had it about 3 months and put almost 1,400 miles on it. Probably about half on the highway because it's a 20-40 mile trip one way to the woods I ride in. But I've had it on some 100 mile trips all on highways at 65 mph showing on the Garmin GPS so that's about 71-72 indicated on the spedo. We all know that bikes spedo's are fairly optamistic on the speed.

And that is with a 13 tooth on the front sprocket. I didn't get what year you have, but if it's new, be sure to break it in right and then stop worrying about the brakes, clutch and all of that. Your butt or the gas tank will tell you when it's time to stop. If you have a stock bike, more than likely you'll get about 90-100 miles before you go on reserve and you'll have around 20-30 miles left until dry. Those of us who have done all the carb mods and the airbox mods and then put on slip-on muffler have a bike that really rips now. But for that we have to pay the price of a good bit less gas mileage. On my last ride Monday of about 95 miles I was coming home and about 80 miles I went on reserve. That's less than 50 miles per gallon, but lot of that was 2-3 gear in the woods and then 7,500 Rpm on the highway. So I came back and ordered the Clarke tank that will extend my distance about 40%.

On the stock seat, my butt could go about 80 miles and then it was asking for a rest and a walk around to get some circulation. Your mileage might vary on this. I have just put in a much softer form seat from Guts Racing. It's a little bit better, but at 70 years I just don't have much meat in the seat. But... The bike is about bullett proof. With it being water cooled, it's very quiet even at highway speeds as the water jacket makes it much quieter. And it's a water cooled 4 stroke. Good gas mileage and runs cool. So.. NOT TO WORRY. Get on the bike, wrap up a bottle of water in a wet towel and strap that to the rack and take off. You'll have fun.

Ride safe.

I don't know about most of you guys, but mostly off road but sometimes on the highway I'm standing on the pegs half the time, I love standing and riding, it gives your backside a rest, is surprising how maneuverable the bike in this position.
