Isn't the 2006 a mechanical speedo, driven by a cable which is driven by a gear at the front wheel? If so, you don't buy an electronic device to calibrate it, you either learn to mess with the magnets or you move the needle on the shaft.
I do have an article at my site about moving the needle on the shaft on a KLR650, which is cable/gear driven...

I don't really look at it as what I can maintain, but what is comfortable to maintain. I'm not a fast rider.
Stock, if left alone on the open road, I find that I ride about 45-50 mph actual (50-55 indicated) and really enjoy the ride. But that's too slow for the freeway so I feel like I'm spinning it uselessly to stay up with traffic.
With the 15/39/tall tire, I find that I'm comfortable at 58-64 mph actual (64-70 indicated). Sixth is now a cruising, 'maintaining speed' gear. If you want to accelerate, 5th gear is only 10% away so you should use it. Or 4th. spin it, get it up to your speed, then go back to 6th.
It hasn't changed what the bike 'can maintain' because you just downshift and choose the gear that is appropriate for the more aggressive riding.

How tall of a tire are you running? im about 2000 miles in on my new bike and those stock tires ran down fast. I have the 15t front on but I was thinking a taller more street friendly tire for the next set would be good like 60/40 or something.

Certainly, I'd do sprockets first, and if you still want more gear, then the tire is the trick.

I'm in need of a 15 tooth sprocket. Hasanyone had used this combo with the stock 42 tooth sprocket? I think i need to lower my r's because when i'm doing 75 on the highway i'm at 8,000 rpm. I would never let my truck spin out that much. Plus i think it would help with my trail grunt.

I doubt the OP would ever rev his truck to 10,000 rpm either, but I guarantee you he couldn't lug that 250 around at 1500 rpm like he does with his truck.
I found it while trying to decide if I want to take the ten buck risk on a JT 16t counter shaft sprocket.
After digging around and doing some numbers with my spreadsheet I find if I run a 39 on the rear with a 13 it is slightly lower overall than the OEM 42/14. Then if I ran a 15 or 16 it would really be good and tall for the road if I want, then back to a 13 for the trail play. I won't be pushing the limits to the point of needing serious low gearing, so I'm looking.

Thanks for bringing back an old thread, i need some advise on this. i plan to install a 15T on the front, got one from ebay which says it fits the KLX250S but when it arrives it says on the packaging its for KX250 '87-89 so i'm not sure if it will fit the KLX250S. this front sprocket is from Moose Racing.
I also plan to change the rear sprocket to 39T, earlier in the thread Watt-man stated the rear sprocket (39T) from the KLX250SF will fit the KLX250S, can this fit without changing any other component?

When I did a BB1500 and SS1000 I had 15 tooth on the front and a 39 on the rear. I don't remember what chain length I used.

The SS and BB, I need a new saddle before I go that route...and to change my 13/47 gearing...and a 351! I've made 700 miles in a day and it was tough, poor weather(high winds) made it harder. My hats off to you, Ron. I've got to reread your RR on the Iron Butt.

Thanks for your feedback, good to know the 15T and 39T fits but were there any changes made besides just reducing the chain link? does the 15T fit the front with the casing? does the 39T at the back fit without problems and changes to other components?
im not sure what is BB1500 or SS1000 but i would assume it means riding 1500 miles and 1000 miles in one day? if you did 1500 miles in one day on a klx250, then i have to salute you!! that is some amazing feat. i've done 1500km in one day before but that was on a Versys and it was one of the most tiring ride i ever did, it requires a lot of mental strength. i do plan to try to do 1000km on the klx250 and thats the reason i want to change the sprockets to 15/39T. i want to cruise at around 130km/h.

With the 15 tooth I did have some wear from the chain on the case saver (part 12053-1337 in the parts fiche).
