klx250 maintenance

Go over all the nuts and bolts to make sure nothing is loose. I just pulled the wheels off mine and notice that the sprocket on the rear wheel is loose. All the bolts are loosened to the point where they hit the locking thingy stamped into the nut. ! I put some hard dirt miles on that thing the last time i rode it, glad it didn't come off.

My bike did that to me a few years ago.
I change the oil and clean the air filter a few times a year, but other than that, it still has the original plug, and the forks are the only thing I've serviced (because they were leaking) since I bought it new in 08.

I change oil and filter every 300-400 miles. I use dino oil. Might have gotten that habit from MX bikes. Air filter every few off road rides. Really depends on how it looks. Or at least once a month. Check nuts and bolts often. Everytime I wash it the chain gets checked and lubed. Valves once a year. It's been said alot of places..... What kills the klr 250 valves and lack of oil. So that's why I change oil often and keep an eye on valves.

2009 klx250sf...over 5,000 miles and reaching 6,000 miles in less than 6 months now...mostly full throttle riding...only mishap was running out of gas once...another time, bike just shut off on rough freeway roads (disabled the kickstand kill switch and never happened again)...had couple hard times starting it up after a week or two weeks of parking...filling up with 91 octane gas, shutting the gas off and running it dry to a stop before extended parking solved that problem...
i make it a habit to shut the gas off all the time now 1/4 mile before reaching each destination and sometimes sputtering to a stop before parking now...don't think this is a problem...is it?...
after 4,000 miles, the moto seems to run smoother and quieter...kdx snorkel helped reduce the noise and vibrations vs. running open box, but now it just feels even quieter with almost no vibrations....things just seems to just sound better...
recently did a 100-mile full throttle ride...90 mph through the freeway...it was a struggle climbing up the mountains...going 55 mph at full throttle at about 5,300 to 5,400 rpm...sometimes crawling to 60 mph...since my rpm was so low, i decided to downswift and pow!...there was the power i needed!...quickly back up to 75 mph and cruising up the mountain with ease at near full throttle...the engine still sounds great, but decided to take it apart to take a look...used some new oil to clean, and everything looked so clean and new....no wear at all...guess the mechanic at the kawasaki dealer was correct...these klx250sf is bulletproof...maybe i'll never have a reason to get a 351 kit....
just thought i share my experience with my 2009 klx250sf....moose jet kit...k&n intake...kdx snorkel...scotts steering damper...15t front sprocket....fmf q4 exhaust...1 inch rear raise...redline full synthetic oil...no other maintenance required besides the oil change...

Local has a Honda 99 XR250R for sale. I'm thinking of picking it up for my 14yr. old. He says the front forks need rebuilt?
Any thoughts?

Ouch! I do about 300 miles every 4-5 days on my 2010 KlX250s. I have put 30,000 miles on my bike since buying it new with 1 mile on it May 2011. I would be in the poor house just buying oil. I general change it every 3,500 or so.

I am replacing the chain, sprockets, and brakes tomorrow. The chain and sprockets should have been done about 5,000 miles ago, but I had no money. Brakes just got to the point they had to be replaced. As far as valves, no issues, but will check again tomorrow. I ride my bike hard, both on-road and off.
