klx250 maintenance
am i missing anything?
- looks like i have to add about 0.2 to 0.4 quarts of oil after about 3,000 ~ 3,500 miles (the remaining oil was dark, but in good condition)....complete oil change and oil filter change every 7,000 ~ 7,500 miles...not leaking anything, but maybe because most of my riding is high rpm/high speed....burning a little oil out...oil levels seemed just above the low mark after little over 3,000 miles...
- brake fluid and coolant every 2 years sound about right?....
- chain replaced at about 20,000 miles?
- tires and brake pads every 10,000 miles (or, if needed)?
- spark plugs...when should that be replaced?...
- valve inspection and adjustments...do you actually inspect and adjust this yourself?....the dealer appears to charge an arm and leg for oil change and valve inspection...

If you ride at high rpm/speed most of the time, 7500 miles interval for an oil change is kinda long. 3500-4000 miles would be better, IMO. Some may even say a 3000 miles interval would be best.
Everything else, except valves, I´d say as needed. Valve clearance on my bike has been done at the dealer, but I trust them since I personaly know all the mechanics there.

when i read the book and it said oil changes at 7500 i just couldnt believe it... thought i was reading it wrong or something, when i found out that was true i felt it was a way for kawa to sell more bikes lol... i change my oil every 1500-2000, dark means change in my book... always has always will. i wouldn't really be surprised if going farther seen minimal downsides but idc, its just my preference ;-P.
I change my plug every spring, just because i store it with oil in the cylinder, ive had valves stick on small engines b4 so i do this now... i suppose if i stored the engine at tdc it wouldnt be such a thought... but o well

i check oil levels daily before a ride...i noticed the oil level slowly dip closer to the low line in the 3,500 miles...use full synthetic 10w/30...it looked pretty dark too...decided to just do a full oil change and also check the existing oil...the existing oil was actually still pretty thick and good....i asked the mechanic and he agreed....that the oil was still good...suggested i add a little fresh oil when it get near low again...and, do the full oil and filter change after 7,000 or the recommended 7,500 miles...

how much does your local dealer charge?...i'm not sure if it's a california thing, but dealer wanted $250 for oil change and check and nearly $500 for oil change and valve adjustments....

went to other local shops to ask about oil change pricing....most quoted me $150....found one shop that quoted $40....was feeling lazy over the weekend, so took it there...$75 for full synthetic oil, filter and $40 labor was the cheapest i found...but, they don't do valve check/adjustments...i'll do it myself in the future and save the $40...i was just feeling really lazy and the shop was able to do it when i went to buy some oil....
$250 oil change at the dealerships...aka..."stealerships"...
