KLX250/351SF valve clearances
#11
There is nothing wrong in that picture other than it is on TDC exhaust, turn the crank 360 degrees, the cams go 180 and in the right position for TDC compression.. But I kinda missed the part about it not running for more than a few minutes... I'd be hauling it back and asking about the valve clearance. Ask them to turn the engine to TDC and show you the valve clearance. That has to be the problem from what the OP says.. Fact is if I had work done and it wasn't running right I'd have it back at the shop the same day.

I get the difference in the methods of measurement.
Yes, the valves sit in little seats.
I will roll the crank and remeasure just to make sure. None of the local auto stores carry metric feeler gauges, everything is SAE with the metric conversion on the gauge. I also went and got a digital micrometer, but it only goes to 0.01mm, cheap crap at the auto stores, I will probably just return it and buy a good one later.

.01mm = .0004" The average micrometer is only accurate to .001", a mic that measures in tenths (.0001) is only accurate to +/-.0001. That +/-.01mm is pretty darn good. Take that from someone who did calibration work and taught micrometer/caliper reading for a leading edge world class cutting tool company.
I would measure again with the right blades with the crank turned to the proper position first.

I got a shim kit from a buddy who had exactly what I needed, an entire Hot Bodies kit. It took 3 tries to get the right measurements but it fired up last night and the rpms came up nicely. I only ran it for 10 seconds as it was in the back garage. The driveway was a skating rink so no test rides yet, maybe Sunday. If it runs good, it's going up for sale.
It's a great little bike but I can't ride it for more than 20 min, I walk a little bow legged until my *** loosens up. I sold my VFR and now have a S1000XR, I really don't need this bike now. My VFR had electrical issues, I burned up 3 stators in 5 years of owning it. Pretty sure I had a lemon, Honda wouldn't do anything about it, so bye bye. Love my XR, the power is rediculous and the comfort is so much better than the VFR plus all the factory farkles.
Thanks for the help. Watch for a for sale ad soon if anyone is interested in it, I'm in Wisconsin.
