RE: KLX vs. KLR
sorry no one's replied to you yet, that's frustrating isn't it? anyway, the 2 bikes are night and day different. the klx is basically a raw dirt bike that's street legal. it doesn't have major power, but it does have a lot of potential to be worthy. the klr is a road bike that's "legal" in the dirt. it's a lot heavier and dates back to the late 80's. it did just get a little revamp styling wise, but nothing major. it's old technology that works if you like that sort of bike. if you want a road bike that can take a light dose of trails, the klr is for you. if you want a more "sharp edged" dirt bike that's street legal and has a good aftermarket following, the klx is the choice. anyone else have anything to add?

RE: KLX vs. KLR
The KLR has a bigger seat, bigger tank, and a longer range. Also a lower seat hieght, and a lot less rip, even in stock form. Not sure how the bike would respond to mods.
The KLX has the taller seat, feels like more aggressive riding position, slightly more rip even stock. It feels a lot more narrow, nimble, and better suited to being a dirt bike than the KLR.
Pretty much what Iowaguy said echo's to how one feels after hopping off one bike and jumping on the other. The KLR is your old man's bike, for cruising down the logging roads and staying to the better maintaned trails. The KLX is more aggressive, more dirt bike.

RE: KLX vs. KLR
One big bonus for the KLR is reliability. It was chosen as the US Army's "2-wheeled utility vehicle" because of that. (That's probably also the reason that it hasn't seen any major modifications for decades).
Its pretty much as everyone else has said ... pretty mild-mannered in the dirt. One note to add: every time I got a little air with it, landing always sounded like a car wreck. [:@]
