KLX for touring

There is about 4500 miles on my bike so it is time to check the valves.
I have done a couple 300-350 mile rides. I l moded the rear rack and welded it a little longer with a big square bag. The inside of the bag is lined with 3/16" aluminum and bolted through the bag.
Not too bad so far

The thing is, you won't encounter 'performance problems' unless you are way off-the-chain lean...ala removing the entire airbox lid, but performance related problems aren't the only worry.
In a lot of cases, the engine will seem a bit more peppy when running somewhat lean, but what you don't see is what is happening inside of your combustion chamber...chances are it's burning hotter. That's why Wedge reported burning up his spark plug. It won't happen over night, but the added heat can do damage.
That's why racers tend to run things a bit on the rich side.

someone said that the '09 wouldn't be able to pull a 15-toother, think it was tremor. others said it may have trouble. I disagree totally. The 2009 KLX's transmission was beefed up over the old bike. The gear ratio for 6th was lowered and brought closer to fifth making it more usable.
Gear--06/07 ratio---09 ratio
1st---3.000 -------3.000
2nd---2.000--------2.000
3rd---1.500--------1.500
4th---1.250--------1.190
5th---1.050--------1.050
6th----.904---------.952

I am also curious about what my options will be. I already want to swap the pipe. But with the FI I am very ignorant and will be looking at learning what my options are. When I get the bike and dirtbagz setup I'll post a follow-up here, then I will open a thread looking for FI mod thoughts.

I have emailed a company named Blue Lighting Racing here in Japan about that subject. They told me that they are adapting their ICON II controller for use on the KLX250s/D-tracker and that it will be ready "soon." This is the same unit that the local Japanese use for re-mapping the WR250X/R.
The last time I visited their website, they had actually entered 'KLX250/D-tracker' on the last line of their compatible Kawasaki model speadsheet, but there's no data or price next to that yet, so I'm thinking any day now.

LOL!
Naw, just too much time on my hands with all of the rain we've been getting.
I'm too attached to the one I've got. I'd just like to see more people here in Japan riding the new one, but I'm pretty sure they'll be shying away from it until they can do something basic like adding an aftermarket exhaust. Either that or they've already bought the WR.
Being a tinkerer at heart, I looked into what it would take to convert to EFI, but there's way too much involved with that.

You might be OK as long as you rejet before adding a slip-on or full aftermarket exhaust.
