My 09 KLX250's tire ate the license plate and the plastic thing that supported it today. I had already trimmed it so it looked like there was enough clearence, but apparently not. Is there an aftermarket solution that will get the plate up higher and tilt it out of the way?

 

Just make a couple of bends on the license plate and bolt it straight onto the rear fender. If your local laws require you to have a plate light, then just retrofit it on there; can't be that hard.

 

That's why I trimmed my fender higher up than alot of the guys on here, and drilled new mounting holes for the plate higher up. The popular thing for '09s on here is to just slice a straight line beneath the plate and leave it as-is. IMHO, that looks half-assed and you run the risk of the whole thing flopping and getting caught in the tire. If you look at the fender, you can trim a little along the curve on the sides and put a straight line cut higher up, then just drill new mounting holes higher up, maybe reinforce it with a piece of alluminum (I did).

Turn the license plate bracket over 180 degrees, it helps angle the license plate out and raises it up abit more so you can trim the rear fender off even higher.

 

Yeah. What RaceGass said. I took a bit of emery cloth to the edges of my plate so that WHEN I come in contact with it, it doesn't slice and dice me. I crashed my XT225 last Summer and knocked off the plate and all the plastic stuff holding it on and wasn't aware of it. THAT convinced me that the new plate needed relocating!

 

thats what i did. worked great till a week ago.

i kinda had the same experince, but with the bike loaded up. plates probally along the ca 111. gave me and excuse to get a new tail light (and blinkers and grips and ...). love the way the bike looks now.

 

Ufo and Acerbis make universal tail light/plate holders. They are angled out and are very simple unlike the monstrosity the factory put there.

 

07 solution.

 

Okay, I finally got around to working on this today. I mounted a Baja Designs LED taillight and plate holder. It required some work with a saw and still wasn't perfect, but good enough for a dirt bike. I used the stock turn signals and I don't think the plate will get damaged unless I loop out.

 

Looks great, Shooter! Now you need to ditch those goofy yellow reflectors on the forktubes
