KLX Chains, Sprockets & Gear Ratios.

RE: KLX Chains, Sprockets & Gear Ratios.
I tried this, but found the chain to be too tight, yes it would go on, but you don't have the 50-60mm chain slack...just a tad too tight...and what do you do if you get a flat? you will not be able to remove the wheel (IMO) unless you remove the master link and this is something that may be difficult to do on the trail

Oh and BTW...I simply flipped the adjusters over to be able to get the chain guard back on..they just point downwards now..I don't see any issues with this set-up as any rocks, etc would have to hit the rotor or rear sprocket before they hit the adjusters..IMO..unless i am missing something altogether?

nah, I don't have my new bike yet but I did own a 2006 KLX250S, so I've been there. The stock chain will NOT fit 13/45, I tried it. The new bike has a new swingarm yes, but I would bet the house that all from the '07 as far as chains/sprockets/lengths are identical. As far as adjustment of 108 chain with 13/45, after installation, the adjusters are at their smallest meaning the wheel is pushed in as far as possible. This means you've got the whole gammet of adjustability on the snails and lots of chain life. However, if you use the chain guard you'll have to cut the snail-tails off as they're right in front of the chainguard mount bolt hole.

Though I have not tried this combination, I suspect it lies in the middle range for chain length 13+45 =58, so which chain do you use, a 106 or 108?? If your login reflects your bike and you have an 09 model, my post may not hold water, as the 09 model has a different swing arm. On earlier models withthis combo, a chain is going to be at one extreme of adjustment.

I went with 13/45 and it was great down low but would still cruise at 60mph w/out too much rpm increase. I think several have this combo and it's been said that it is the most versatile for the bike's abilities both on/off-road.

RE: KLX Chains, Sprockets & Gear Ratios.
Anyone know how a 14/47 will be on the highway? I don't do a lot of Highway but I'd like to do 65 0r 70 Mph comfrotably. Like if 6th gear ended up being more like 5th gear is with the stock sprockets. Plus I'd like to be able to wheelie in 2nd with less Yanking on the handlebars.

14/47 Ratio (3.357) 14/48 Ratio (3.438) 13/45 Ratio (3.461) 14/49 Ratio (3.500). If the bikes 'tweeked', I'd go with the 14/49. bigger sprockets last longer, so does the chain.
Standard is 14/44 Ratio (3.142).[sm=trust_me.gif]

Dunno. Running 13/44 until they wear out. Shop threw in a 13T when I got the bike. Going Renthal 14/49 when they wear.
Got a car for the freeway. As long as it pulls 100kmh on firetrails, I'll be happy.

Thanks Man, I was thinking 14/47 so I could keep the chain guide on. Would the 14/49 Scream on the highway at 70??

RE: KLX Chains, Sprockets & Gear Ratios.
I run my stock gearing for the street and i have more than enough power...For dirt or serious ripping i have a 14/47 or 14/49 setup with a spare chain that i run......the 14/49 on the street is great for impressing the punk kids in town but that's about it.....good for wheelies and that's all.it'll wheelie very well thru 3rd gear. The 47 is a decent gear but i ride commuter all the time so the 42 stays on and get's me moving just fine.....I do have a set of local railroad tracks where if i knock her down into third at about 40 and hit the tracks and pull back at WOT she will wheelie right on down the street....and that is fun but it takes some effort.

My advice – go for a 108 link chain and a 46t rear. It gives the best spread of ratios.
