I did this mod yesterday and after first try, everything seemed fine as per pics. Only difference I left the ACR as is. On start up the bike fired up immediatly, but with a loud clattering. I ran it for a few seconds only on idle. Stripped down again and retimed the exhaust by 1 tooth. Same loud clatter. Did it again with the exhaust cam set back to original position and only intake side modified. Same loud clatter in engine.
Could i have damaged something? If so what?

Any suggestions?

1. you didnt accidently drop the head cover bolt guides? there are 2 of them.

2. are you sure you lined tdc up correctly? there are many marks but the T is horizontal [90degrees]

3. Did the caps on the cam seat easily? If not something may be out of whack.

please post some pics

OK panic is over. I re did the whole job back to standard. I was having difficulty getting everything lined up 100%. I find that after lining up all the marks with the tensioners out, all seems good. Once the tensioners go back in the whole timing chain and sprockets were being pulled in a anti clockwise direction by a few degrees. So after about 3 more tries with bruised knuckles I managed to time it all back. Bike runs as normal again. All good. I have now had so much practice at removing and re/assembling, that when I eventually pluck up the courage to strip it down and do the mod, should be easy.
I will post step by step pics shortly of how not to do it.

your tensioner should not make the cams move degrees etc, when you put the timing chain one push down on the cam cover to make sure everything is sitting right and count out the links.

the tensioner is purely there to tension, if its making your cams move something else is seriously wrong.

you should really move them the two teeth on each side like marcellino has done, you can just change the intake timing and leave the exhaust the same but skipping the exhaust back one tooth will cause issues.

make sure you locktite the cam sprocket bolts and leave it for at least 24 hours, otherwise you will get a loud clatter that is your cam sprocket rattling around and your engine will stop or have other severe issues.

I have a 1995 KLX250 and I plan on doing the mod. Do I need to re-jet it and If yes what should use? It is original right now.

Default local mechanic

Anybody know of a local mechanic in Orange County,CA that's done this mod. While I love mechanical sh*t, I'm just to busy at work and wanna spend my time riding not wrenching, esp with 3 bikes

Default D-Tracker 250

FOlks, Marcelino's fix WORKS! Big gains in the mid-range with no fall off up top that I can discern.

I dumped the ACR and the bike starts better than it ever did with no problems.
