Great advice, thanks for your response.
Prior to reading this I removed the airbox lid and took the bike for a quick zip up a hill which runs up to state forest. There was a definate improvement but it was so loud when working, i'm not sure if I can stand the noise in the long term but for now I am happy to be getting better response. The road is gravel, quite twisty and dry, in the mid to top end, the bike behaved perfectly. After a short detour down a rough fire trail I tried a tricky, steep uphill climb. It needed a virtual standing start and once again the bike bogged down and it was only a bit of clutch feathering and some revs that prevented a stall. This is the area that needs some attention. I'll do the mods you suggest and get hold of Norm Kouba to organise a tee screw.
At least I have some dirt in the tyres now so i'm happier....still a bit more work and i'll have to think about that airbox lid, there must be a way to get a happy medium. Perhaps the pipe will help and allow a partial closure over the filter.
I'll keep the reports coming as things are changed.
Cheers

It is pretty loud with no lid on the air box. If you want to try a compromise, try taking the snorkle out of the lid, and put the lid back on. Many run theirs this way, me included. It isnt as loud, and you still get more air in.
