Default Jump Start from a car...

My 2009 sat in the cold for too long this winter. The battery has a bit of juice but only enough to crank it over a couple of times.... i tried push starting it but the rear wheel just locks up (neighbours thought i was crazy)

anyway - i'm reading conflicting reports on jumpstarting the bike from a car... I know it can be done... but should the car be running? many websites say that the car's alternator puts out too many amps and could fry electric systems on the KLX...

Suggestions?

Should be fine without the car running. Have the jumpers hooked up for a few minutes before you crank the bike.

Nonsense.
12V is 12V, and the bike will only draw as many amps as it needs, car, or not.
Hook it up, and go.

Agreed. Put the bike in third gear with the choke on. Get some good monentum going and let out the clutch while you silultaneously drop your **** on the bike seat. It'll start but you need to ride around for a good while before the battery charges enough for a cold start again.

You're going to need some very long wires.

Getting a battery tender would be good to prevent it from going flat while not being used.
