I'm also weiry about going up to the 331... the 300 is cheaper, and definetly doesn't void the warranty from what I've heard. some dealers were even offering the upgrade with the sale of the bike. The 331 I'm not really sure how much more expensive it is or how much HP you get over the 300. so far i've heard only good things about both. Oh and with the 331 i'm pretty sure you have to upgrade to a pumper carb so that should also be factored into the total cost. I guess thats the diffrence between the 300 and the 331, total ending price...

Welcome to the club. You will enjoy the extra cubes.
For Pie4foou: You don't 'need' to have a pumper with the 331. Adding a pumper just allows you to instantly dial-up that added low-end grunt, if, sayyou need to get the front end up in hurry. The CVK has more of arheostattype of feel to it...it's more gradual, soyou can'tdial-up all of the added power so quickly.
The difference between pumper and CVK become more a lot pronounced as you increase displacement, but you don't need to spring for a pumper just becuase you have 331cc...that gets pretty pricey.

My total cost with shipping, including Honda premixed coolant, assembly lube, oil and an oil filter came to $508 with shipping from Ron Ayers. Took about 1 1/2 weeks for everything to arrive. I pretty much knew what I needed as I rebuilt top ends before, and was able to confirm my part numbers with a listing here on this forum as well as on ADV Rider.
The biggest reasons for not going 331 were several, first, I didn't have a 300cc jug to bore to 331cc, I wasn't comfortable boring the 250cc jug to 331cc either. Next, while I know the world has been using cast iron cylinder sleeves forever, in fact my lawn tractor and my truck has them, there is something to be said about plated and a reason why Kawi went with that. So, just for my own peace of mind, I wanted to stay plated. Which meant, again, OEM 300 or bigger money for the 331 kit from Kustom Kraft. I also didn't want to deal with jetting, it seemed I couldn't easily find recommended jetting using the stock carb for the 331cc kit, even Bill Blue wasn't able to make a recommendation, which meant, trial and error or some dyno runs, which added uncertainty and cost.
Finally I wanted OEM reliability. I am sure the 331 is realiable now, but there are no long term tests and I know there are a ton of KLX300's out there, so I wasn't so concerned about it being reliable.
I may still upgrade to the pumper sometime down the road, perhaps next year. I like doing things like this in steps, as I get bored.

Hmmm these are very sound reasons for going with the 300. I like that you dont have to get a new carb to get the full effect out of the 300. But what sort of power difference would one expect from a 300 to a 331? I'm thinking bang for buck 300 would be good because you can easily get away with running the stock carb (jetted properly of course).
Eventually I'll need a 450 I think, but 300 might do it for a while. Hell the 250 is good enough for a while, just has a little trouble with big hills.

Im lookin to do the same mod, but the prices work out about $700 local without oil, filter and fluid. Ugh it may be paradise but the price of parts annoys me.
