Default Jetting for High Elevation

Just moved out to nederland colorado from connecticut. i lost a lot of power from the elevation change living at 8500ft now. just wanted to see what people recommend for jetting kits. also with some mechanical skills is it easy enough to do yourself or its just better to let someone else do it.

They don't actually let you see him. Frozen dead guy >> http://www.nederlandchamber.org/events_fdgd-home.html
Is your bike stock, no aftermarket pipe? I was out there in "08" but can't remember about the jet I ended up using. I know I had to take the airbox lid off, and I played around with some smaller jets. (my bike was stock then) I'll have to dig around and see if I can remember the jet I ended up using. Like I said I may have ended up being the stock jet. It ran ok but bogged some at full throtle. Let me look.

Jo Ann & I live in Kansas & ride in Colorado 3 or 4 times a year we ride up to 13,800' I jet the klx 12% leaner on the main jet leave the pilot jet as is & adjust the air fuel screw to where the engine peaks at idle then adjust the idle where you want it.

It's easy enough to do yourself, and after a couple of times you'll find it easy to do.

You'll have to experiment. It's going to be a combination of jetting, needle setting, the mixture screw setting, and what you decide you want to do with your airbox and exhaust. I used the KDX snorkle on the airbox and the Big Gun exhaust. I can't remember exactly what I ended up with (pumper carb on now, another jetting project) but I remember having multiple main and idle jets. I think above 11-12000 feet, the 115 main (stock is 118) did better, I think I had the airbox lid off. For 8500 feet, I was using the KDX snorkle with either a 120 or the stock 118, the 122 and 125 were just a waste of fuel. There were so many different needle clip settings and airbox combinations, I just don't remember...

Good luck, you'll get it...

I found my (crappy) notes. I had 110, 112, 115 main jets with me. I know I tried different combinations, but the only thing I have written down is that I ended up putting the stock 118 back in and running the bike with the airbox lid off. I had also just put on a No-Toil air filter. Like I said it wasn't perfect, had a bog at full throttle. You can change the jets without taking the carb off of the bike. Un hook every thing from the carb and loosen the boots holding the carb then you can spin it in the boots to get at the bottom of the carb. One handy tip I found on here, was to replace the machine screws that hold the bowl on the carb. Get rid of the phillips head screws and install allen bolts (socket head cap screws). Easier to get an allen wrench in there than a screwdriver. That set up did ok at 11,000 + ft. Rode to the visitors center at the end of Fall River rd in Rocky Mt. Natl. Park, and up nearly to the Needles Eye tunnel on the old Rollins Pass rail bed (good area for the KLX)
Pretty sure we are going to be out there this summer, it would be cool to meet up and ride the rollins pass.

Lean as at #118 main at sea level. Just remove the airbox lid any it should be good to go. Doesn't get any easier than that.
