If one wants one on the cheap a KDX could be had. Ain't a KTM, but still has some snot and can probably kick a KLX's butt on single track. Probably throw together a pretty trick KDX with KX forks and all for less than 2 grand I'd think with some good C'list and ebay sleuthing.

+1^^^ KDX is a great budget do all off roader. I have a plated 2003 KDX200, not a fair comparison to the KLX offroad. 60lbs lighter, more power than the 331. For dual sporting the KLX is great, more on road comfort, no mixing gas, KLX gets twice the mpg. As cheap as the KDX can be had for it is a great second bike for true off roading.

I was looking for a KDX, but everyone I saw was totally beat but mechanically sound or looked great but ran like crap. I just found what I really wanted for about twice what I wanted to spend and all I needed to buy for it was 2T oil. Is it a garage queen? Nope, it's clearly been looped, the rear fender has a bend mark to prove it, has a bunch of trail scratches, etc. But it has all the farkles, the suspension has been sorted, and runs perfectly.
I will spend money for lights, horn, and a brake switch to DS the 200, just because, but an OHV sticker, moto-tote, and car will get me to any riding and races.
Now to get rid of the snow....can't wait for April or May when I can ride off-road.

My dad has an older KDX200 motor, it's around a '94, mounted on a 125 frame. It's not the best looking bike, but that thing is nearly indestructable. He once did a 2 or 3 hour cross country race stuck in 2nd gear after breaking the shifter off on the first lap... and it's actually been the most dependable bike in our garage over the years.
