i'm buying a new left case how do i keep it from happening again?

Default i'm buying a new left case how do i keep it from happening again?

so i was riding along minding my own beeswax, and herd a clunk and got back to the truck to find i had a neat little crack in my case infront of the CS right where the CS cover bolts up, so as i'll be buy a new one how do i keep this from happening again? in 45kmi it hasn't happened why now idk? any better case saver out there i can't find anything for it

Can you give us some more info, or a pic, or an idea of what hit what or smacked the case? I'm not real clear on what you're describing.

Are you saying that a chainlink gave away and the chain hit the case?

no the chain is fine it made a wierd pop while riding back to the truck on a logging road to get lunch and head to our next trail, i have no idea what happend if it picked something up or what, its a small crack above where the plastic guard lower bolt goes into the gen. case you can't see the crack now i jb welded it up while i was up there beacues i had another 300mi to ride to get home it stoped the oi from coming out and i ordered a new case so that'll be fixed but i wan't to know if there's some way to keep it from happening again

Someone here, I think Dan888, made a better case-saver. No other aftermarket ones that I'm aware of.

That's a strange one, tb. I don't think I've heard of a failure like this, so there may not be any obvious fixes that have been tried. Plus, looking at that location on mine, I think if the odd but possible event of a hard enough rock to get lodged up there and forced into that tight spot by the chain/sprocket, I don't think much of anything is going to stop some carnage. There's little to no room to place any substantial armor that's much better than the steel plate that's already in there. That doesn't mean something better couldn't be made, but I wonder if it's worth the trouble.

Now, this is all assuming my rock theory is correct. What does your metal shield that bolts into this area look like? It seems that would have had to be nearly destroyed for the rock theory to have taken place.

My stock set up always got so full of mud , (it would come out the round holes like play-doh) I started running without it on the bike. I didnt like the idea of having nothing between the case and chain, so i started working something up. I got about 70% done on a prototype and then called it good enough. I need to take some time and revisit this project. Maybe this winter.

The one I made up, and have had on my bike for a couple years, is a bunch of layers of .125 thick aluminum pinned together. I stacked the layers up drilled holes through them all in two places and then riveted them all together using a piece of .125 rod pounded tight and peened over. After they were all riveted together i blended all the edges together with a big nasty file. I would love to get this one perfected and maybe make one out of solid aluminum. I'm not nuts about how the clearance gets tighter as the chain goes around, something could get wedged in there.

Good point there. I was thinking about this as a winter project also. Would probably make a template out of wood or plastic first and keep the 15 tooth CS on for tolerances.
