Default I just joined, and have a few questions

Hello All,
After buying an 09 KLX250s a week ago, I decided to join this Kaw Forum. I've got only 42 miles on the green beast now, and I really like the bike. It kind of reminds me of my old XL600r.

The manual states I should keep it below 4,000rpms for break-in. Wow, that is tough because that is about 40 mph. Im pretty much doing it, but I have to stay in town, since every other road is 50mph or more. Also, do any of you folks have any break-in tips. I don't believe in the "Ride like you stole it" for break-in on a new engine. Also, do any of you folks have any break-in tips.

Yesterday I rode to my local Kaw dealer and bought 2 oil filter elements. I figure I'll change the original oil at around 100 miles, and get a lot of the metal shavings out off the engine. Does anybody have any thoughts or tips on the oil change? Is the element change a pain in the butt?

I've heard that the spring on the oil filter is a pain in the @$$, but have not changed out my oil yet. Had planned to do it last week, just didn't get time to do it. What I've been told is to not crank on it and rev it out, nor load it down at low RPM .. just take it easy and try to stay below 7000, and change the oil frequently for the first while, as you have been planning to do anyway. Enjoy the bike!!

yea.... dont worry about staying under 4 grand.... just dont stay at the same rpms for awhile...... others have bent the spring to fit in the engine better, me, i just lay the bike down and set it in and its all good.

Trick for the spring is to stretch out the coils at one end just a bit so that it wedges itself in there good...
Hard to explain accurately, but if you flare out one end of the spring it holds itself in place.

Pete,

Congrats on your new ride and welcome to the asylum.

You're right about having trouble sticking to Kawi's recommended break-in method, keeping the revs under 4K is just not realistic. I think Eric's comment is spot on, and if you check around on some previous threads you'll find similar thoughts. After a few hundred miles you know you're going to want to open that throttle full bore for a few seconds....

My '07 has just under 900 miles on the odo and for all intents is broken in, but I still haven't spent much time north of 8K. A little more each day..
