i did my first oil change...ever...
very cool. sure it was 'easy' but have to understand i've NEVER been interested in mechanical "stuff" until becoming a rider. anyway i'm proud of me so here's my question:
i have a '12 KLX250s (US version) and manual says to fill with "1.1L"... i have added 1L and "some" of another, started my bike and let engine warm up. there's no leaks anywhere (whew). when sitting level however, i can barely see oil in the 'window' view. do i keep adding until that window is showing oil between the lines? i know i'm over 1L added (each bottle itself is 1 liter)...what am i missing? i know this is probably a stupid question but as i'm trying to learn how to do these things on my own, i really don't know what i don't know

ummm...1 liter?....that's too little...i'm not sure what manual you have, but manual calls for 1.3 without oil filter replacement and 1.4 liter with oil filter replacement...if it's full synthetic, it takes some time to settle down...i typically measure exact and pour 1.4 liter after i drain and replace oil filter...oil should be where it shows on my picture...
if the spring falls out...get two needle nose pliers to expand one end of the spring slightly...snap it back in it and it'll never fall out again...

Make sure you get the workshop manual (not the tiny book they give you with the bike) but the full service manual. It can be downloaded, maybe someone got a link?
Get a good socket wrench set, a torque wrench and then buy tools as you need em. I started out buying a medium-highend wrench, socket and bit set with 104 pieces and then bought another 10 tools or so. I can do most things on the bike with these tools and they will last me a long time.
Be careful with tightning stuff too hard. I stripped a few bolts and sockets that way. Next up I need to get tools so I can cut some new

careful with the torque wrench..the drain plug is a "plug"..you don't need to tighten too much...and, 1.4 liter or 1.5 quart of oil....add more oil if you really did put only 1 liter...

ok thanks all! yep spring came out...was prepared for it lol... i used the 'grease' trick and that worked like a champ. bought a torque wrench but only goes down to 20lb, so back i go to buy a smaller one. annnnd adding more oil right now! awesome thanks for the encouragement. next up, i'm going to try the jet kit...i've been reading and watching videos. worse case is if i can't get it all back together i'll take it to a local shop for damage repair!
