I am courious about your opinions on a KTM450 or 400 Dual sport. How well do they carve in the sand and jump? Also are they maintenance intensive and do theyhave a short piston skirt?

I can't think of a better person to answer that question than Nobrakes. He had a KLX250S that he did every possible mod one could think of including the 300cc kit, then having that bored to 331cc. He sold the KLX and now has a "DP" Katoom 450. He is a great guy and extremely knowledgeable. Fortunately for us, he still frequents this forum. Hopefully he will see this thread and answer your questions

The KTM 450 works fine in the sand, but so does the KLX250S. Just depends on what you want. You can expect more maintenance with the KTM but I don't think it's excessive. Valve checks are more frequent but easier on the KTM, and oil changes are a bit more involved but not horrible - 2 filters to change and 2 screens to clean, but the filters and screens can be done every 2nd or 3rd change.
The 450 has more power for sure and has pulled me out of trouble on more than one occasion. But I saw some amazing things done with pretty much stock KLX250S's this weekend in the sand. The rider makes all the difference. I think the best advice I've heard is to try it for yourself. Not a dealer bike - borrow a buddy's so you can thrash it a bit and find out how much you can push it and how it behaves. You can't do that idling around in the parking lot at the shop. And you won't find the KLX250S's virtues unless you throw it around some, keeping in mind that depending on the mods already done, it's not real hard or too expensive to get more out of the KLX, in both power and suspension.

I must say that I have tried to stay away from this forum since a lot of you don't like my blunt remarks and opinions.

There is no 'try'...only 'do' or 'do not.'
Sorry, but 'blunt' doesn't quiteencompassidiotic, whacked-out or mean-spirited content.

you are such the expert on everything. I bow down to your great wealth of knowledge and ever-encompassing philosophy on language. Ya know what's idiotic? I'll tell ya what. Believing that your 250 is actually making 30 horsepower, that's idiotic. I don't care what dyno told you that or two told you that, it's incorrect. You don't actually believe it do you? Do you have some top secret japanese KLX engine? I didn't bring this up earlier, but since you threw the first jab I'll bite. The guy with the 331 kit, pumper, headwork, cams, etc only mustered 28 or so. Do you really think he and nobrakes believe you? They will never say that they don't, but I would think they would have their doubts. There, that "blunt" enough for you? Go ahead with your holier than iowaguy rant now. It really does get entertaining at times to listen to your garb tremorman.

Most every thread on here exhibits a bit of rectum licking amongst participants, but not this one.
