Default How not to clean your chain *GRAPHIC*

I have a friend who races street bikes. He sent me this link to a forum he's a member of. Do not open if you can't handle seeing blood.

Wow!...a rag...a chain under power...some WD40...if ever there were a recipe for disaster. I'll occasionally have my KLR650 up on a rocker stand with it running to lube the chain. But the chainlube spray can has at least a 6" plastic spray tube attached, and my hand and the can are well away from the chain. The worst that can happen is the chain grabs the little plastic tube and pulls it out of the spray nozzle.

I have a good buddy who's been an excellent mechanic all his life and employed at shops since '73. He has a portion of his middle finger ground off by a chain and sprocket that occured back in the '70's. He's older and wiser now.

It seems the key contributing factor was that he "rushed"...ie..he was in a hurry to get out, so he took a shortcut it seems....a good lesson to keep in mind when doing anything...never rush things..I sure won't after seeing those pics. That sucks.

Dang, that looks painful. Not to mention permanent loss of his fingertips. Do those bikes not have a lower chain guide? I guess not. Would have prevented that, I think.
