Default How hard to install the 330 kit on klx250?

who has the 330 kit and what do you think of it compared to the bike with the free mods & exhaust? I have a 2002 ktm 125sx in my garage next to my klx, and i cant decide what bike i like more. The klx has more bottm end for sure, but once the pipe is hit on the ktm its just incredible the diffrence. So for tight technical trails *which i ride mainly* the klx is faster for sure, but i would like to get a little more ooomph from like 7k up i think. Does the 330 kit accomplish this? What was the total cost for the 330kit? where did you get it? will it work on a 2007?

How hard it is to install a big-bore kit depends on your mechanical experience. If you've ever rebuilt any kind of gasoline engine, it's not really that hard. If you've ever rebuilt a 2-stroke, you've only got a few extra things to deal with. If you've ever rebuilt a 4-stroke motorcycle, it's old hat. Even if you are completely new to engine work, if you take your time, keep the bike and work area clean, and be **** about keeping the parts, pieces, nuts and bolts together as you take it apart, you'll be able to do it.

You definitely need to get the service manuals for the torque specs. They alsolay out the disassembly in a step-by-step process. However, Kawasaki's manuals are not as illustrated as Suzuki's and Honda's, so read carefully. Basically, you'll be taking the entire top-end of the engine off, replacing the piston, rings and cylinder, then reassembling it. Depending on how many miles you have on the engine, it's also an opportune time to adjust the valves.

I put a 340cc kit on my KLX from Thumper Racing. I think I paid about $475 for the kit, which included re-sleeving a KLX300 cylinder, the piston, rings, wrist pin, and the needed gaskets. The 331cc kits can be sourced from Kustom Kraft and Four Stroke Works. They take a KLX300 cylinder, bore it, then re-coat it with Nikasil (sp?).They also include all of the necessary parts and gaskets. All of these kits are good, and they will work with your 2007. You may also be able to use your stock cylinder - check with the supplier and see what they say.

While the big-bore kit increases power everywhere, it really shines on the bottom end. I have at least twice as much low-end power now over stock. It has more power on top too, but the gain wasn'tas much as down low. However, I'm running the stock gearing. If you gear down a little, you'll reach the upper RPM's quicker. No matter what you do though, a big-bore kitwill notgive you the hit of a 2-stroke. Your KLX will have the same power characteristics asit hasnow - it will just havemore power throughout.

I think you'll find that with the added low- and mid-range torque, you won't need to keep the motor wound out. You can leave the bike 1 gear higher than you normally would use andjustgive it the throttle. The added torque will just pull and pull.Bottom line is that if you want the top-endpower of a 2-stroke,a big-bore kit won't help. In fact, it usually performs the opposite be increasing low- and mid-range power.

Excellent and well detailed answer mustang, only thing I want to add is if youcould getmore top end you could use different cams to change the power characteristics of the motor. You can trade low end grunt for top end hit by changing cams, although I don't recommend it. I think the engine will last longer by leaving in the stock cams or using a mild cam. Revving the motor higher usually will result in higher wear rates.

i like the low end grunt of the bike, i would like a little more low end into the mid power, top end is trully kinda worthless to me when i think about it. i like the ktm's power uptop because you get that thrill of sheer excelleration, barely able to hangon you know? but for tight technical trail riding its worthless for top end power.
1 more questions though!!! where do you find cams for a 2007? are previous klx250 models
compatiable (parts wise) with this bike?

2006 and 2007 are the same bike apart from a couple of graphics changes. Most older KLX parts would work and a lot of the 300 parts are the same however there are differences. The best way to find out is to go to the kawasaki.com website and check out the parts you can even see what parts fit other Kawasakis, for instance the KLX250 (06) intake cam fits the following

KLX250-D2 KLX250R (1994)-->CAMSHAFT(S)/TENSIONER

ยท KLX250-D3 KLX250R (1995)-->CAMSHAFT(S)/TENSIONER

ยท KLX250-D4 KLX250R (1996)-->CAMSHAFT(S)/TENSIONER

ยท KLX250H6F KLX250S (2006)-->CAMSHAFT(S)/TENSIONER

ยท KLX250H7F KLX250S (2007)-->CAMSHAFT(S)/TENSIONER

ยท KLX300-A10 KLX300R (2005)-->CAMSHAFT(S)/TENSIONER

ยท KLX300-A2 KLX300R (1997)-->CAMSHAFT(S)/TENSIONER

ยท KLX300-A3 KLX300R (1998)-->CAMSHAFT(S)/TENSIONER

ยท KLX300-A4 KLX300R (1999)-->CAMSHAFT(S)/TENSIONER

ยท KLX300-A5 KLX300R (2000)-->CAMSHAFT(S)/TENSIONER

ยท KLX300-A6 KLX300R (2001)-->CAMSHAFT(S)/TENSIONER

ยท KLX300-A7 KLX300R (2002)-->CAMSHAFT(S)/TENSIONER

ยท KLX300-A8 KLX300R (2003)-->CAMSHAFT(S)/TENSIONER

ยท KLX300-A9 KLX300R (2004)-->CAMSHAFT(S)/TENSIONER

ยท KLX300A6F KLX300R (2006)-->CAMSHAFT(S)/TENSIONER

ยท KLX300A7F KLX300R (2007)-->CAMSHAFT(S)/TENSIONER

The exhaust cam fits the following

KLX250H6F KLX250S (2006)-->CAMSHAFT(S)/TENSIONER

ยท KLX250H7F KLX250S (2007)-->CAMSHAFT(S)/TENSIONER

ยท KLX300-A2 KLX300R (1997)-->CAMSHAFT(S)/TENSIONER

ยท KLX300-A3 KLX300R (1998)-->CAMSHAFT(S)/TENSIONER

ยท KLX300-A4 KLX300R (1999)-->CAMSHAFT(S)/TENSIONER

ยท KLX300-A5 KLX300R (2000)-->CAMSHAFT(S)/TENSIONER

ยท KLX300-A6 KLX300R (2001)-->CAMSHAFT(S)/TENSIONER

ยท KLX300-A7 KLX300R (2002)-->CAMSHAFT(S)/TENSIONER

as you can see the exhaust cam doesn't fit as many models, I'm guessing because of the KACR.

Cheers
